Employment
Employment (for the purposes of maintaining your status) is receiving compensation of any form in exchange for performing a task or providing a service.
Employment eligibility for F-1 and J-1 status students is divided into two basic categories: On campus employment and off-campus employment.
On-Campus Employment:
- Work that you have been hired to do for the University of North Dakota, usually (but not always) on the actual UND campus.
- In the majority of cases, your paychecks will come directly from UND.
- If you are not absolutely certain that your job qualifies as on campus, you should contact an International Student Advisor before beginning to work.
- All students in F-1 and J-1 status are eligible to work on campus up to 20 hours per week as long as certain conditions are met.

Off-Campus Employment
- All employment that does not qualify as on-campus employment.
- Eligibility for off-campus employment is quite limited for F-1 and J-1 students.
- All off-campus employment requires special advance authorization.
