1.
The TN (Trade NAFTA) category of United States visa
was developed as part of the North American Free Trade
Agreement (NAFTA) to facilitate the entry of Canadian
and Mexican citizens to the United States to engage
in professional business activities on a temporary
basis. The TN visa is not recommended
for tenure-track faculty. The University
of North Dakota is authorized to hire qualified and
authorized Canadian and Mexican citizens in TN visa
status. Landed immigrants or permanent residents of
either country are not eligible for the TN visa.
2. NAFTA lists 63
professions as eligible for TN visas. Among these
professions are university teachers, scientists, research
assistants, computer systems analysts, librarians,
and medical professionals.

Time and Duration Limitations for
TN Visas
Both
Canadian and Mexican citizens can be admitted to the
United States in TN status in increments of up to
1 year. Extensions of stay are also granted in up
to 1-year increments. There is no cumulative total
limit on the time a Canadian or Mexican citizen can
be in TN status. Status can be renewed each year indefinitely,
provided the stay in the United States
remains temporary in nature. Each application
for Extension of Stay or readmission will be examined
by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service officials
to determine if the employment is indeed temporary.
