Health
Services
The Student Health Service is open from 8 a.m. to
4.30 p.m., Monday through Friday. For emergency service
after hours or on weekends, dial 777-4500 and follow
the instructions on the recorded message.
The clinic provides thorough medical treatment, evaluations,
and health education. Please call 777-2605 to schedule
an appointment. Enrolled students are not charged
for office calls, however you will be charged for
special services including laboratory fees, X-rays,
and the pharmacy. The cost for these services is usually
much lower than other facilities. All charges are
automatically billed to the student's general account,
and a statement is sent out through the Business Office.
Student Health will refer seriously ill patients and
patients needing major surgery.
All of your medical information is strictly confidential.
Health
Insurance
Many international students and scholars come from
countries where the government pays for medical care.
In the United States, the cost of health care is usually
shared by the person who uses the services and by
some form of health insurance plan.
The State
Board of Higher Education requires all international
students at UND to be covered by a plan that has at
least $100,000 of coverage for students, has provisions
for major accidents and organ transplants, and covers
repatriation. At this time, the selected plan for
International Students is the "World
Class Coverage Plan " from Cultural
Insurance Services International.
Students are automatically charged for an entire
year of health insurance coverage (August 15th through
August 15th) in the fall, along with their tuition
and fees.
If students
begin in the spring semester, they are charged from
January through August. For the 2005-2006 school year,
the health insurance premium is $756. The Graduate
School covers a percentage of this amount for graduate
students with assistantships. After the first few
weeks of school, the difference will be reimbursed
to the student's UND account. If you are already covered
by an alternative insurance plan that you brought
from home, you must bring proof of comparable coverage
to your International Student Advisor at the Office
of International Programs so that the $756 insurance
charge can be removed from your UND account. Please
note, the Business Office will not remove the insurance
charge from your account without a memo from the International
Student Advisor.
For insurance matters, F-1 students and J-1 exchange
students should contact their International Student
Advisor at 777-4118. For information on the
specific coverage provided by your insurance plan,
please contact the insurance agent directly. The local
agent for the UND International Student Insurance
coverage is Vaaler Insurance. Vaaler can be contacted
either by telephone, (701) 775-3131, or by visiting
their office located at 2701 South Columbia Road in
Grand Forks.
- Dependents
- F Visa
F-1 students are strongly advised to have health
insurance coverage for their dependents. The high
costs of treatment in the U.S. can spell financial
disaster for those without adequate health insurance
coverage. To add dependent family members to your
insurance plan, please pick up the appropriate form
from the Office of International Programs.
- Why do international students and scholars
need health insurance?
Medical costs are very expensive in the U.S. It
is not uncommon for hospital bills alone to range
from $1000 to $100,000. If you are injured or ill
and do not carry health insurance, you will be responsible
for paying the bill. In addition, medical facilities
may refuse treatment without a guarantee of payment.
For these reasons, and your own peace of mind, it
is mandatory to have health insurance. It allows
you to get medical services you need when you need
them and it protects you from unexpected expenses
that can cause great worry and even interrupt your
academic study.
- Who
needs health insurance?
Most international students in F status will need
this policy. Students, scholars and dependents in
J status are required to have health insurance in
the U.S. or they will have to abandon their program
and go home. Students in M status at UND have health
insurance paid by their employers. Canadian students
are not required to purchase the policy, but should
have extra Blue Cross insurance for their stay in
the U.S. Check with your Blue Cross provider in
Canada.

Cooperative
Education
Cooperative Education Cooperative Education is a very
important resource for students who wish to gain experience
in their field of study before graduation. Students
establish a credential file with Career Services/Cooperative
Education 6 months to 1 year before they wish to work,
create a resume, and target employers with the help
and expertise of the Cooperative Education Office.
The Co-op staff, along with your academic departments,
assists students in identifying and contacting potential
employers. Many students who apply for Curricular
