UND starts using E-Verify November 1, 2008
What is E-Verify: E-Verify is an Internet-based system operated by the United States Customs and Immigration Service (UCICS) in partnership with the Social Security Administration (SSA). E-Verify is currently free to employers and is available in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands. E-Verify electronically compares information entered on the Employment Eligibility Verification, Form I-9, with records contained in SSA and Department of Homeland Security (DHS) databases to help employers verify the identity and employment eligibility of newly hired employees.
Why is UND going to use E-Verify: E-Verify is currently recommended by the federal government for all employers and is currently mandatory in several states. Within the next few months, E-Verify will be required of all employers that receive federal contracts, which includes the University of North Dakota. Due to the large number of departments and new employees, the UND administration has decided to implement E-Verify as of November 1, 2008, to make sure all process changes are in place, prior to the mandatory requirement.
How will E-Verify be implemented: The implementation of E-Verify is explained in the E-Verify Powerpoint Presentation. If you have any questions regarding the E-Verify program, please contact the UND Payroll Office at 777-4226.
