In collaboration with the Center for Instructional Learning and Technologies (CILT),the Physics Department introduced the Personal Response System (PRS), an in-class real-time electronic feed back system, to UND in the Fall semester of 2004. A PRS consists of handheld remote transmitters carried by students and a network of receivers connected to the podium computer. The students are able to submit responses to multiple choice quizzes/queries using their transmitters. The results of such a quiz/query are immediately abulated and displayed in the form of a bar chart, giving both the instructor and the student immediate feedback on how well the students have comprehended the concept tested on. PRS hardware and software are being marketed by GTCO Calcomp Inc.

Utilizing CILT funds, lecture room 114, Witmer Hall has been wired for PRS receivers. This system is being used this year (2004-2005) by Dr.Marasinghe’s in his University Physics (Phys251) as a pilot project. During this pilot project transmitters purchased by are being loaned to students. Working with CILT and UND’s Institutional Research, Dr. Marasinghe will assess the impact of using the PRS system on student learning and the teaching experience.
