Scholary Interests:

Communication and Relationships are guiding aspects of my professional life. A Full Professor of Communication, I am also a Core Member of the General and Experimental Psychology Program at the University of North Dakota. My area of research is issues of trust and distrust in relationships and I am best known for my work focusing on communication in mentoring relationships. I am the author of Mentoring Enactment Theory, a theory regarding the use of communication to initiate, maintain, and repair mentoring relationships. Other research interests include the detection of deceptive communication, gender and communication, health communication, and cultural differences and similarities in communication. A member of the Board of Directors of the International Communication Association, I am also active in the International Conference on Language and Social Psychology.
