Graduate Teaching Philosophy

I teach PSYC 575 (Behavior Pathology) for students enrolled in our clinical psychology Ph.D. track and our Forensic Psychology Master's degree curriculum. I try to present information from diverse theoretical perspectives with receptiveness to legitimate alternative interpretations of empirical findings. I offer my personal interpretations of available research with an emphasis on biosocial learning but try to do so in a way that welcomes divergent opinions. I use personal experiences, current events, and multimedia to provide context and real-world implications regarding the phenomena referenced during the course. My lectures are audiotaped and assigned outside of class time which is reserved for discussion and video presentations. Course content is revised annually with a emphasis on research published in the preceding year. This graduate psychopathology course involves a combination of primary and text reading assignments evaluated through weekly multiple choice and two semester essay exams. Students also submit weekly written questions before class regarding the material we are scheduled to discuss.

Clinical Interests

I have found consideration of generalized response tendencies (i.e., personality) to be particularly important in understanding the problems that are presented by clients in clinical practice. I have advanced ideas for more effective integration of personality testing into short-term structured therapy formats. In my teaching and practice I have tried to encourage new and creative ways to more fully realize the integration of science and practice. I have been maintained a limited community private practice since 1987.

Research Interests

My research program has been focused in the areas of childhood physical abuse and trauma, agression, personality and psychopathology, alcohol research, and professional training issues. Let me summarize some of these research efforts:

I am interested in relationships between personality disturbance and how adult forms of psychopathology are manifested. I believe that psychopathology can best be understood through research that informs professionals about the interaction of personality traits and situational factors on relevant measures of psychosocial functioning. In this regard I find interactions between high risk group membership (e.g., trait aggressiveness, physical abuse histories, exposure to domestic violence) and situational stressors (e.g., provocation, alcohol intoxication, etc.) to be particularly interesting. We have conducted a number of studies of laboratory aggression (using both the Point Subtraction Aggression Paradigm and Taylor Aggression Paradigm) among participants classified in various high risk groups. One current student (Jessica Mugge) completed her thesis on relationships between childhood bullying and exposure to aggressive videogaming as factors that might influence TAP responding.

I have also developed the Violent Experiences Questionnaire (VEQ-R) as a brief measure for detecting histories of physical and domestic abuse that can be used for large scale screening of potential subjects. Measures of parental, sibling and peer physical abuse are provided by the VEQ-R as well as indices of domestic violence. I have also developed the Developmental History Questionnaire (DHQ) as a brief screening measure for various forms of developmental adversity. In summary, I am interested in interactions between personality variables, various forms of developmental adversity (e.g., physical and sexual abuse, exposure to domestic abuse, parental alcoholism), and important outcome variables such as physical aggressiveness.

The department's alcohol laboratory provides an opportunity to examine the role of alcohol in a wide range of psychological processes. My research has relied upon a state-of-the art intoximeter that can provide breath alcohol estimates at five minute intervals. This equipment allows researchers to collect data at specific points on the alcohol absorption and elimination curve. My current alcohol research interest involves efforts to alcohol-induced aggression in the lab among high risk participants as a predictor of aggression as it may occur in the community.

I am interested in relationships between personality disorder variables and a range of outcome variables including those that measure interpersonal perceptual processes. I recently chaired a dissertation examining the participant accuracy of perceiving visual and auditory cues of emotion among socially anxious individuals. I have also collected psychometric and interpersonal perception data (development of the First Impression Interaction Procedure) from hundreds of undergraduate psychology students at UND. My initial focus has been on judgmental personality tendencies as reflected in harsh first impressions, but this work will be extended into other areas of interpersonal perception. I am in the process of analyzing data for additional studies from this archival data base which includes developmental and personality variables of wide interest.

I have also published a number of survey studies concerning professional training issues that routinely arise in CUDCP (Council for University Directors of Clinical Psychology) annual meetings. Articles focused on training issues also bring national attention to the program within the important ranks of clinical scientist-practitioner program directors. I am now extending this program of research into the role of theoretical perspective on the interpretation of empirical research. In a recent experimental study one of my students and I manipulated manuscript content to see how graduate students perceive and interpret the meaning of empirical data.

You will see that I have also chaired many projects that extend beyond my specialized areas of interest, and I would consider extending my work to some extent to advance the career interests of selected students. My archival data base is also available for possible collateral projects that might interest you. I would need a clear and specific set of hypotheses and plan for particular analyses that can be shown to be similar to those utilized in one or more recent publications, i.e., the proposal should be clear, publishable, and not inordinately time-consuming.
