Minutes of General Education Requirements Committee April 28, 2006

 

1.      A meeting of the GER Committee was held on April 28 in Carnegie Hall, Room 102.    

Matt Cavalli presided.

 

2.      Those present at the meeting were Matt Cavalli, Joan Hawthorne, Wendelin Hume, Lana Rakow, Ty Reese, Ryan Zerr, and Connie Borboa.

  

3.   Minutes from March 31 and April 21. Lana Rakow moved to approve the minutes.  The motion was voted upon and carried unanimously.

                                       

4.  Chemistry 340 validation for social science general education requirement credit. Lana Rakow moved to approve the request.  The motion was voted upon and carried unanimously.

 

5.   History 101, 102, 103, 104, 220 and 240 revalidations for social science and arts and humanities general education credit. History 102 also revalidated for world cultures credit. Matt Cavalli moved to approve all of the History requests. The motion was voted upon and carried unanimously.  The History department has elected to not revalidate the following courses: Hist 221, Hist 325, Hist 326, Hist 332, Hist 333, Hist 351, Hist 407, Hist 408, Hist 413, Hist 414, and Hist 415.

 

6.  Physics 130/130L, 150/150L, 161/161L, 162/162L, 211/211L and 212/212L revalidations for math, science and technology general education lab science credit.

 

Atmospheric Sciences 110 revalidation for math, science and technology general education lab science credit.

 

Ryan Zerr moved to approve the revalidations.  The motion was voted upon and carried unanimously.

 

7. Sociology 253 and 361 revalidations for social science general education credit. Sociology 326 revalidation for math, science and technology general education credit. 

 

Criminal Justice 201 revalidation for social science general education credit.

 

Communication 110 revalidation for communication general education credit. Communication 103 and 300 revalidation for social science general education credit. Communication 103 was not approved for world cultures credit.  The application for world cultures credit needs to completed and submitted to the general education committee.

 

Joan Hawthorne moved to revalidate all of the requests.  The motion was voted upon and carried unanimously.

 

8. Communication 102 revalidation for social science general education credit.  Joan Hawthorne moved to return the request to the department for a more thorough analysis of the information.

 

9.  Industrial Technology 300 revalidation for math, science and technology general education credit; and IT 322 revalidation for arts and humanities general education credit.

Computer Science 101/101T, 120 and 160 revalidations for math, science and technology general education credit.

Math 103, 115, 165 and 166 revalidation for math, science and technology general education.

 

Ty Reese moved to approve the above listed revalidations contingent upon approval of the subcommittee. The motion was voted upon and carried unanimously.  Please see following addendum.

 

10. Remaining revalidations.  Joan Hawthorne moved to have all remaining revalidations turned in to the Committee by the end of August. The motion was voted upon and carried unanimously.

 

11. Revalidation for Space Studies 200.  Ty Reese moved to return the request to the department asking for additional information. The motion was voted upon and carried unanimously.  Please see following addendum.

 

12. Topic for fall discussion.  Procedure for revalidation of a new general education course that was validated in the middle of a cycle.  Should there be a preliminary or probationary year and an assessment required the following year?

 

13. Fall Workshop.  The workshop is scheduled for August 25, time to be determined later.

 

14. The first fall meeting for the Committee will be August 17.  Matt Cavalli will send out e-mail about meeting times.  The agenda will be to discuss the fall workshop.

 

15. The Language Department will need to have their revalidations in by the end of August.

 

16. Honor Department.  Matt Cavalli moved to give the Honors Department a deferment from the motion requiring remaining departments to have revalidations in by the end of August. The motion was voted upon and approved unanimously.

 

17. Matt Cavalli will appoint committee members as liaisons to the upcoming revalidating departments.

Addendum to minutes

 

Chair Anne Walker on responded on behalf of the subcommittee to agenda items 9 and 11.

 

9. Computer Science 101/101T, 120 and 160. Subcommittee agreed with Committee approval.

Technology IT 300 and 322.  Anne Walked talked with department chair and they will collect assessment data in the fall.

Math 103, 115, 165 and 166.   Subcommittee agreed with Committee approval.

 

11.  Space Studies 200. Subcommittee felt this course should be approved for revalidation.  There was support for all six goals checked on the request but did have supporting information for four out of the six. Subcommittee’s recommendation was to approve.
