Minutes of the General Education Requirements Committee March 14, 2008
- A
meeting of the GER Committee was held on March 14, 2008, in Montgomery
20, Ryan Zerr presided.
- Those present
were Suzanne Anderson, Devon Hansen, Joan Hawthorne, Sukhvarsh Jerath, Chuck Moretti, Lana
Rakow, Don Poochigan, Ty Reese, and Ryan Zerr.
- Minutes
of February 22, 2008. It was moved and seconded to approve the
minutes, voted upon, and carried unanimously.
- Ryan
Zerr recommended that the Committee consider changing the name to reflect
the new Essential Studies program.
He proposed Senate Essential Studies Committee.” It was moved by Joan Hawthorne and
seconded by Don Poochigan. The
Committee voted and the motion passed unanimously.
- Ryan
Zerr indicated to the Committee that the department of Philosophy and
Religion has requested relief for revalidation of all their courses and
splitting the two subject areas for validation cycle. Joan Hawthorne moved that there be a one
year deferral for one subject and a two year deferral for the other. Ty Reese seconded the motion. The Committee voted and the motion
passed with one abstention. (The
cycle will be Religion 2009-2010 and Philosophy 2010-2011)
- The
Committee discussed the “Application for ES Status” documents drafted by
Ryan Zerr. The four documents were
for Arts and Humanities, Oral Communication, Social Science, and Math,
Science and Technology. There were
adjustments made to the Oral Communication document. Don Poochigan moved to adopt the new
forms as adjusted. The motion was
seconded by Lana Rakow. The
Committee voted and approved the documents as adjusted.
- There
was discussion of revalidation of English 302, 308, 315, and 408. Lana Rakow moved to approve revalidations.
The motion was seconded. The
Committee voted and the course revalidations were approved.
- The
Committee discussed a student petition by Robyn Daly. Ty Reese moved to disapprove the petition. The motion was seconded. The Committee voted and the petition was
disapproved.
- The
Committee discussed and decided on proposed validations.
- A
& S 252 – Moved by Joan Hawthorne to approve. The motion was seconded. The Committee voted and the validation
was approved.
- CSD
101 and 102 –The Committee determined that there was a lack of direct
assessment and there needs to be a statement in the course syllabus
regarding general education. The
Committee tabled the proposal to send it back to the department for more
information.
- Engl
226 – The Committee determined that there is a lack of enough assessment
information. The request was
tabled to send back to the department for more information.
- Engl
299 – The Committee discussed that topic courses taught regularly should
be approved as regular courses. Regular
courses approved for general education are able to be included in the
degree audit. Lana Rakow moved to
disapprove the validation. The
motion was seconded. The Committee
voted and the validation was denied.
- Nor
102 – Lana Rakow moved approval. The motion was seconded. The Committee voted and approved the
validation.
- The
next meeting will be held on March
28, 2008, in Montgomery Hall.
