Minutes of General
Education Requirements Committee
1. A meeting of the GER Committee was held on February 18, in Montgomery Hall, Room 20. Wendelin Hume presided.
2. Those present at the meeting were Matt Cavalli, Patrick Haertel, Birgit Hans, Mark Hoffmann, Wendelin Hume, Tom Rand, Brian Steenerson, Gary Towne, Anne Walker, and Connie Borboa. Visitor Lisa Paciulli.
3. Minutes from February 4th meeting were approved.
4. Wendelin Hume thanked the committee members who showed their support by attending the General Education Longitudinal Study meeting held February 11.
5. Validation of Geol 303 and Anth 309, Discovering Earth History, for math, science and technology general education requirements credit. Lisa Paciulli presented additional material for the committee to review. Gary Towne moved to approve the request. The motion was voted upon and carried unanimously.
6. Validation of SpSt 300, The Case for Space, for math, science and technology credit and social science general education requirements credit. The committee reviewed the request and felt the course did not meet the math, science and technology credit. Mark Hoffmann moved to approve SpSt 300 for social science general education credit only with a need to clarify direct assessment. A reminder to the department that the course does not need to meet all of the general education goals but an assessment is needed for all of the goals the course does meet. The motion was voted upon and carried unanimously.
7. Update on revalidation process: Physics courses-a month from now; Music-three revalidations are ready to go; Languages-no update; Technology-should be done by spring break.
8. World Cultures requirement for students coming from other countries. Discussion. Tom Rand will work on statement and bring to next meeting.
9. There was discussion on the General Education Requirements website and what links could be made to make the site more user friendly for students. Committee members were asked to think about this.
