Minutes of General
Education Requirements Committee
1. A meeting of the GER Committee was held on April 1, in Montgomery Hall room 20. Wendelin Hume presided.
2. Those present at the meeting were Matt Cavalli, Patrick Haertel, Joan Hawthorne, Mark Hoffmann, Wendelin Hume, Tom Rand, Ken Ruit, Tom Steen, Gary Towne, Anne Walker, and Connie Borboa.
3. Minutes from March 4 meeting were approved.
4. Math 405 for one-time revalidation will be discussed next meeting.
5. Civil Engineering 301 and 302 applications for General Education requirements Writing-
Intensive status. The department is asking that these courses replace CIEN 303 in this area
which has been deleted from their curriculum. Gary Towne moved to approve the request
pending approval by the Writing Committee. The motion was voted upon and carried
unanimously.
6. Revalidation progress reports. Gary Towne turned in Music’s revalidations and they will be
distributed for the next meeting. Mark Hoffmann will check with Physics and Gary Towne
will get in touch with Languages.
7. There was discussion on the following topics:
a) Responsibilities of the General Education Committee and how the General Education Task Force fits in.
b) Function and form of GERC--should the committee be larger and divided into two committees, one working with the technical issues and the other working on goals.
c) Wording of “goals”- students and faculty are fuzzy on the general education goals.
These topics will be discussed further in the following weeks.
8. The Committee was updated on the upcoming academic year campus-wide assessment and
general education activities. Peggy Maki, an international consultant on assessment and
learning, will be speaking Friday, August 26, and possibly returning at the end of the year.
9. Ken Ruit discussed the mission statement for general education and asked the
Committee to provide feedback.
10. Committee members were asked to think about the reduction of the number of General
Education requirements credits from 39 to 36. This will be discussed at a later date.
