Minutes of Essential Studies Committee May 2, 2008

A meeting of the GER Committee was held on
2. Those present at the meeting were Suzanne Anderson, Devon Hansen, Joan Hawthorne, Sukhvarsh Jerath, John La Duke, Don Poochigan, Ty Reese, Ryan Zerr and Connie Borboa.
3. Minutes April 18. Don Poochigan moved to approve the minutes. The motion was seconded, voted upon and carried unanimously.
3. Revalidations of Classics 101, 102, 201; French 101, 102, 201; German 101, 102, 201, 406; Norwegian 101, 201; Russian 101, 102, 161, 162, 201 for arts and humanities credit. Ty Reese moved to approve the revalidations. The motion was seconded, voted upon and carried unanimously.
4. Revalidations of Honors 102 for social science credit and Honors 103 for math, science and technology credit; Nutrition 240 for math, science and technology credit and Nutrition and Dietetics 335 for social science credit. Ty Reese moved to approve all of the revalidations. The motion was seconded, voted upon and carried unanimously.
5. Revalidation of Political Science 250 for social science credit. Ryan Zerr moved to approve the request. The motion was seconded, voted upon and carried unanimously.
6. John La Duke moved all courses that were carried over, had requested extensions, or were up for regular revalidation this year and did not turn in paperwork be removed from the general education course list and the essential studies list. The motion was seconded, voted upon and carried unanimously. (The following courses will be removed from the general education and essential studies list per this motion: CSD 232; Geol 102L, Geol 105 Beyond Oil.., Geol 111R, Geol 303, Geol 322; IS 331, IS 352, IS 388; Span 101, Span 201; Classics 185)
7. English 241 and 242 revalidations. Ryan Zerr moved to remove both courses from the general education course list and the essential studies list. The motion was seconded, voted upon and carried unanimously.
8. Art and Theatre Arts departments’ revalidations. Joan Hawthorne moved that an extension be granted to the Art and Theatre Arts departments and any provisional courses that have not been taught yet remain on provisional status. All revalidations will be done using essential studies criteria. The motion was seconded, voted upon and carried unanimously.
9. Student petition for Robyn Daly. Joan Hawthorne moved to approve the request. The motion was seconded, voted upon and carried unanimously.
10. Communications 212 essential studies validation. Ryan Zerr moved to deny the request and ask the department to contact Joan Hawthorne to discuss assessment data. The motion was seconded, voted upon and carried with one abstention.
11. John La Duke moved to recommend revalidations and validations focus on one aspect even if they are doing more than one and to give the ESC chair the authority to change information on forms. The motion was seconded, voted upon and carried unanimously.
12. Validation of Information Systems and Business Education 320 for writing intensive area. Joan Hawthorne moved to deny the petition due to the lack of assessment data. The motion was seconded, voted upon and carried unanimously.
13. Quantitative Reasoning. Omission of information requiring Math 102 or equivalent as pre-requisite. Don Poochigan moved to add the Math 102 or equivalent requirement to the quantitative reasoning section and to have ESC chair talk to departments about the need to add this requirement to courses already approved. The motion was seconded, voted upon and carried unanimously.
