Minutes of General Education Requirements Committee March 4, 2005

 

1.      A meeting of the GER Committee was held on March 4, in the Memorial Room of the Memorial Union. Wendelin Hume presided.

 

2.      Those present at the meeting were Joan Hawthorne, Wendelin Hume, Tom Rand, Tom Steen, Gary Towne, Anne Walker, and Connie Borboa.

                                        

3.      Minutes from February 18th meeting were approved.

 

4.      Revalidation progress reports.  Music has two more revalidations ready to go and Languages is working on theirs.

 

5.      Validation of T&L 433. Gary Towne moved to approve the request.  The motion was voted upon and carried unanimously with the stipulation a brief addendum about direct assessment be added to the request.

 

6.      The General Education Committee web site was discussed along with the possibility of high-lighting the general education courses in the time schedule.

 

7.      GERC/GE Task Force/GE Council. Discussion of upcoming school year (2005-2006) campus-wide assessment and general education activities.

 

8.      Tom Rand moved to approve the following statement regarding world cultures.  “The World Cultures requirement will be considered fulfilled for students from outside the U.S. and Canada who come to study at UND.”  The motion was voted upon and approved with one abstention.

 

9.   Matthew Golz’s student petition to have the world cultures requirement waived and

      substituted by participation in International Center events between 2001 and 2005.

      Tom Rand moved to approve the petition with the additional requirement of

      submission of reflective journals stating how these experiences have influenced his

      understanding of cultures other than his own. The motion was voted upon and approved

      unanimously.
