Minutes of General Education Requirements Committee October 8,

2004

1.      A meeting of the GER Committee was held on October 8, in Twamley Hall, Room 404. Wendelin Hume presided.

2.      Those present at the meeting were Matt Cavalli, Patrick Haertel, Mark Hoffmann, Wendelin Hume, Martha Potvin, Tom Rand, Tom Steen, Brian Steenerson, Anne Walker and Connie Borboa.

3.      Since Dean Nichols is no longer with the University, Wendy asked for volunteers to work with the College of Education and Human Development, Department of Industrial Technology and Department of Teaching and Learning on their revalidation requests.

4.      Tom Steen will be sitting on the Committee as liaison to the Senate Assessment Committee.

Indirect assessment was talked about – what students and faculty think about classes and direct assessment – measures of what students are learning.

5.      Revalidation workshop will be discussed more next week with regard to the time it will be offered and what will be covered.  Could a direct assessment component be added to the workshop?

6.      There needs to be a change from indirect to direct assessment.  The goal and challenge of this year’s committee will be how to get direct assessment for all of the general education courses.

7.      A survey will be mailed out asking departments to identify the general education goals that are being met by their general education courses.

8.      Tom Steen moved to add a question on the revalidation form asking departments to identify which of the education goals the course aims for with a six box list. The motion was voted upon and approved unanimously.

9.      Minutes of May 3, 2004 were approved.

10.  Meeting adjourned at 10:15 a.m.
