Essential Studies (ES) -- UND's general education program -- is the academic core of the university experience at UND. The courses offered in the ES curriculum provide broad and diverse perspectives on how human beings think and feel, solve problems, express ideas, and create and discover new knowledge, and will help students acquire essential intellectual skills. UND undergraduates take a number of ES courses out of the conviction that citizenship in a complex world demands a breadth of knowledge and a wide range of intellectual skills. This knowledge and these skills are meant to prepare UND students for satisfying and effective professional and personal lives, and for participation in the public life of their communities.
