Admissions Process
Students may apply for admission to the Recreation and Tourism Studies program at any time following the completion of 24 semester hours. A cumulative grade point average of 2.20 or higher and successful completion of Psy 111, Soc 110 and Comm 110 are required for admission.  Admission forms are accepted and approved on a continuous basis.   Students may obtain a copy of the admission application from the Department Secretary in Gillette 110 or download a copy.  Applications should be submitted to the Department Secretary.

B.S. IN RECREATION AND TOURISM STUDIES

Students may apply for admission to the Recreation and Tourism Studies programat any time following the completion of 24 semester hours. A cumulative GPA of 2.20 orhigher and successful completion of Psyc 111, Soc 110 and Comm 110 are required foradmission. Students interested in admission should consult the RTS program.Required 125 credits (36 of which must be numbered 300 or above, and 60 of which mustbe from a 4-year institution) including:

202. Introduction to the RTS Profession. 1 credit. Prerequisite: RTS 201, RTSmajors only. Introduction to the recreation, parks and leisure services profession. S

204. Group Leadership. 3 credits. Development of understanding of and abilityto utilize leadership and group facilitation strategies to enhance individual’s recreationand tourism experiences. F

260. Inclusion in Recreation Settings. 3 credits. Study of individuals with disablingconditions and their leisure-related needs with emphasis on integration strategiesand legislation that facilitate community involvement. F

272. Recreation and the Natural Environment. 3 credits. An overview of the useof natural environments as formal and informal settings for leisure and recreation involvementand the interrelationship among people, the environment and leisure. F

322. Recreation Program amd Event Planning. 3 credits. Prerequisite: RTS 201.Development of programming skills for recreation programs and special events in varioussettings. F

323. Recreation Program and Event Implementation. 3 credits. Prerequisite:RTS 322. Implementation and evaluation of programs planned in RTS 322. S

370. Principles of Tourism. 3 credits. Overview of tourism including travel behavior,tourism planning and policy, tourism impacts and promotion of tourism.

371. Outdoor Recreation and Resources Management. 3 credits. The principlesof managing outdoor recreation sites and visitor systems where the natural environmentprovides the dominant attraction. Selected parks, resorts, camps, and preserves willserve as example applications of management strategies. On demand.

373. Adventure Recreation and Tourism. 3 credits. Study of adventure and riskactivities in recreation and tourism settings. On demand.

385. Professional Development I. 1 credit. Prerequisite: completion of RTS 202.Individual and group study of career opportunities and professional development in therecreation and leisure services field. F, S

397. Cooperative Education in Recreation and Tourism Studies. 1-4 credits,repeatable to 16. Prerequisite: RTS 201. A practical work experience with an employerclosely associated with the student’s academic area. Arranged by mutual agreementamong student, department and employer. S/U grading only. F, S, SS

442. Recreation Administration. 3 credits. An examination of theories and principlesof administration for recreation services. S

465. Recreation, Tourism and Sustainable Communities. 3 credits. Study ofthe role of recreation and tourism in the development of sustainable communities, particularlyin rural settings. On demand.

470. Interpretative Methods. 3 credits. The principles, methods, and materials ofinterpretive naturalist programs for recreational agencies. Emphasis is placed on obtainingpractical experience in developing interpretive materials and programs. On demand.

471. Wildlife and Nature Tourism. 3 credits. Study from a social science perspectiveof wildlife-related recreation and tourism, including hunting, fishing, naturestudy, and ecotourism. On demand.

479. Recreation Areas and Facilities. 3 credits. Prerequisite: RTS 321 or consentof instructor. Design and maintenance of recreation areas and facilities. Includes onsitevisits. F

485. Professional Development II. 1 credit. Prerequisite: RTS 385. Independentand group study of professional development and placement for the recreation and leisureservices field. F,S

494. Directed Studies in Recreation and Tourism Studies. 1-4 credits. Prerequisite:Consent of the instructor. An indepth study in a subject area selected by the studentunder tutorial supervision. F, S

497. Internship in Recreation and Tourism Studies. 4-12 credits. Prerequisite:Recreation and Tourism Studies majors only. Development of professional skills byworking directly with established leisure, recreation and human services organizationsunder the supervision of professionals and faculty. S-U grading only.
