The Red River Valley Writing Project supports a variety of inservice programs to meet the professional development needs and interests of teachers, including a range of inservice options for schools and school districts, teacher-lead school study groups, or a combination of both. Administrators interested in one of the inservice options below or indiscussing the possibility of a partnering with the RRVWP to develop an inservice should contact Pam Fisher, RRVWP Outreach/Inservice Coordinator. Option A: Focused Study with 15 hours* of continuing education hours for 1 UND credit
Sample theme: 6 Traits of Writing Workshop
Meeting 1: (3 contact hours)
•Introduction to 6 Traits led by RRVWP Teacher Consultant (TC)
Meetings 2, 3, 4: (9 contact hours)
•Participants read about two traits (via book or articles)
•Each meeting features a 3-hour workshop led by RRVWP TC
•Discuss book/readings
•Dig deeper into the two traits: share writing samples and practice using rubrics
•Teacher roundtable: participants share a lesson/book they used to help teach about the trait(s)
Meeting 5: (3 contact hours)
•Pulling it all together: thinking about using 6 traits with next year’s/semester’s students.
•Teacher roundtable: participants share a lesson/book they used to help teach about the trait(s)
•Share writing samples and practice using rubrics
*The fifteen hours ideally are spread out over a 5-month period to give participants the time to absorb and
experiment with new knowledge and strategies.
School/School District Cost for Option A:
RRVWP Teacher Consultant Fee: 15 hours x $100/hour = $1,500
Books: 10 at $20 = $200.00 (RRVWP could pay for these if we kept them in the RRVWP
library and they were on “loan” to teachers)

Participant Cost for Option A:
UND Continuing Education credit: $50/participant
Option B: Focused Study – no continuing education credit

•Choose a book based on 6 traits (There are different books for different levels)
•Meet 3 times to discuss the book. The RRVWP TC facilitates the book discussion.
School/School District Cost for Option B:
Initial RRVWP Teacher Consultant Fee: 3 hours x $100/hour = $300.
Book Study Facilitator Fee: $200.
Books: 10 at $20 = $200 (RRVWP could pay for these if we kept them in the RRVWP library
and they were on “loan” to teachers)

Option C: Monthly* RRVWP In-service (No continuing education credit opportunity)

Onsite staff member facilitates sharing of ideas regarding the use of the Found Poem Rereading
strategy. (This could also be led by a RRVWP TC, if desired.)
Month 2 Topic: Using Graphic Organizers to Increase Reading Comprehension
•Week 1: After school Meeting (1 hour)
Sample strategy: Graphic Organizers – RRVWP TC
•Week 2/3: All teachers try out 1-2 graphic organizers in classroom
•Week 3/4: After school Meeting (1 hour)
Onsite staff member facilitates sharing of ideas regarding the use of the graphic organizers.
(This could also be led by a RRVWP TC, if desired.)
Month 3 Topic: Summarizing
•Week 1: After school Meeting (1 hour)
Sample strategy: Summarizing Strategies – RRVWP TC
•Week 2/3: All teachers try out various summarizing strategies with students
•Week 3/4: After school Meeting (1 hour)
Onsite staff member facilitates sharing of ideas regarding the use of the summarizing strategies.
(This could also be led by a RRVWP TC, if desired.)

Follow-Up: TC/Teacher Mentoring – twice/year for each teacher for a total of 4 hours/teacher
