The School of Communication at the University of North Dakota is searching for four energetic scholars to participate in transforming the School into a national and global leader in communication education, scholarship and outreach. This unusual opportunity will allow a strategic investment of resources in staffing the School for maximum impact on student success and elevating its national and international reputation.
The School of Communication is part of the College of Arts and Sciences. With a current enrollment of 380 majors and graduate students, the School offers bachelors and masters degrees in Communication and the Ph.D. in Communication and Public Discourse. The School has a strong history of preparing graduates to lead in professional settings worldwide.
One of the major institutions of higher education in the Upper Midwest, the University of North Dakota is a public research university with a current enrollment of 12,800 on-campus students and another 5,000 served at a distance through correspondence and on-line instruction. The University is located in Grand Forks, a growing rural city of 58,000 people. An excellent school system, a low crime rate, a vibrant arts community and a reasonable cost of living contribute to the city’s very high national ranking for quality of life.
All positions are tenured or tenure track and are open with respect to rank and area within the communication discipline. This includes one endowed professorship in journalism.
Applicants for Assistant Professor should have a Ph.D. in communication or related area, or have completed all of the requirements for it by August 15, 2008, and a scholarly agenda that demonstrates the potential for significant contributions to the field of communication.
Applicants for Associate Professor should have a Ph.D. and a well-documented record of high quality, peer-reviewed publications and presentations that indicate a successful, coherent research agenda.
Applicants for Professor should have a Ph.D. and a well documented record of high quality, peer-reviewed publications and presentations that indicate a successful, coherent, research agenda as well as a national/international reputation as a communication scholar and leader in their area of expertise.
Additionally, candidates must demonstrate the academic and research credentials and professional competencies to:
• communicate clearly and effectively
• sustain a scholarly agenda that is productive in terms of measurable peer reviewed outcomes,
• seek external grant funding,
• effectively teach undergraduate students and mentor graduate students,
• collaborate and work productively with colleagues both within and outside of the School,
• develop courses in their area of expertise, and
• assume appropriate leadership roles within the School and in the professional community to actively promote and contribute in positive ways to the future direction, development, and success of the School.
Successful candidates will be selected based on the criteria outlined above and how they complement the expertise of the existing faculty and the other candidates being hired. Individuals with teaching or professional experience in the high need areas of advertising/social influence, visual communication, journalism/mass media, and public relations are especially encouraged to apply.
