United States Sen. Ken Conrad, N.D. (seated) got a crash course from University of North Dakota chemical engineering faculty on their research to develop a biojet fuel that will run at colder temperatures, cost less and be more environmentally friendly than the conventional jet fuel.

Dorgan Announces $2.8 million DOD Research Contract
U.S. Sen. Byron Dorgan announced that the Department of Defense has awarded a $2.8 million research contract to Alion Technology and the School of Engineering and Mines to develop new manufacturing technologies that could revolutionize how engines and machine parts operate.

Rocket Girls Finish 17th Among 100 Teams at Team America Rocket Challenge
Grand Forks ND Red River High School seniors Courtenay Thaden, Sarah Thaden, and Bryn Putbrese, also won First Place for best time using a single-stage rocket and most innovative use of unconventional materials at the model rocket contest held May 21, 2005 at Great Meadow in The Plains, Virginia. SEM supported the team's trip to the competition.

Fuel Cell Car Unveiled
UND's Fuel Cell car won the Technical Innovation Award at the 2005 Formula Sun Grand Prix in Topeka, KS. After unveiling the car on Earth Day, the Society for Energy Alternatives (SEA) set their sights on qualifying for the 2005 North American Solar Challenge race.
