Where do I go to declare my social work major?
Education building Room 105.
Where do I go to declare a major other than social work?
Go to the college that that the degree is offered in.
How do I declare a minor?
Check with the college that is offering the minor. Every department will differ. In addition, on the "Application for Undergraduate Degree" form, you will write down the minor that you will be receiving. For a minor in Psychology, you may call 777-2749 or go to Montgomery Hall.
What services are available to social work students?
A computer lab is located in the basement of Gillette Hall. In addition, a lounge area is located next door to the computer lab. Hours are Monday through Friday 8:30-4:30 . Each social work major is assigned a mailbox, which is located in the lounge.

Credit for Work Experience
Is credit given for life experience or previous work experience?
No
Can I receive credit for working?
Yes, if you enroll in Cooperative Education. For four hours of work per week, you may receive one credit. You may enroll in 1-6 credits per semester. For more information contact Career Services .

Major Courses
What courses will count for advanced social sciences and the social work department's world cultures requirement?
Your advisor has discretion on what will count.
Are UND social work courses offered online?
No. However, the Division of Continuing Education offers other courses through correspondence and online studies. Lake Region State College located at the Grand Forks Air Force base primarily offers non-social work courses at night and during the lunch hour.

Field Experience
Could I get paid for my field placement?
Yes, please see the Field Instruction Manual for further information.
Can I take required coursework during field placement?
Students must complete social work core coursework before they enter field.
Could I have a job during field placement?
Yes. However, keep in mind that field placement is priority when scheduling work hours. In field, students work 32-46 hours per week.
What will my field placement hours be during field?
Students discuss hours with their field instructors to determine when they will work.
When do I take vacation during field?
Students discuss vacation time with their field instructors to determine when they can take vacation. Students do not necessarily have to follow the university academic calendar.
Where can I do my field placement?
Please see the listing of field placement agencies . On occasion, new sites may be developed.
Could I do my field placement in two agencies?
The expectation is that students will stay in the same agency to maximize learning opportunities.

What do I need to do as I'm getting reading to graduate?
Please see the Guide to Graduation . Make sure to apply for graduation at the Registrar's Office in the beginning of your final semester.
Are there services offered to assist students with the professional job search?
Yes, Career Services offers free services that include resume writing, interviewing strategies, and job search.

Licensure
When do I take the licensing exam and whom do I contact?
Contact the social work licensing board in the state where you will practice during your last semester or after graduation. In North Dakota , contact the North Dakota Board of Social Work Examiners . In Minnesota , contact the Minnesota Board of Social Work Examiners .
What are the differences between the social work licenses in North Dakota ?
A Licensed Social Worker (LSW) holds a bachelor's degree in social work and is limited to working for an agency or organization. A Licensed Certified Social Worker (LCSW) holds a master's or doctorate degree in social work and must also work for an agency or organization. A Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker holds a master's or doctorate degree in social work and has successfully completed within four years, three thousand (3,000) hours of post-master's clinical social work experience. A Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker may practice independently and is eligible for reimbursement by third party insurance payers. North Dakota social workers at all levels of licensure are required to complete 20 hours of continuing education each licensing period.
