Current Financial Assistance

IV-E Child Welfare Stipend

Recipients of the IV-E Child Welfare Stipend are contractually obligated to work for a North Dakota public child welfare agency for a specified period of time after graduation. Bachelors degree students could receive up to $9,700. Masters degree students could receive up to $9,800. Applications are accepted on an ongoing basis.

Graduate School

The Graduate School provides information about scholarships, graduate teaching assistantships, and research assistantships which are offered from a variety of departments. Students work approximately 10 hours per week and earn a tuition waiver and health insurance. Students who are interested in a graduate assistantship from the Department of Social Work should indicate their interest at the time of application. Graduate students are kept informed of important dates, deadlines, and news (including graduate assistantships) by joining the graduate student announcement email list.

Catholic Charities ND/ Hassing Scholarship

$1,000 Scholarships are available from the Catholic Charities ND/ Hassing Scholarship if: 1) you are a full time junior social work major, 2) you plan to practice social work in North Dakota, 3) you have been a resident of North Dakota for at least four years, 4) you feel you are spiritually consistent with the teachings of the Catholic church (need not be Catholic). Catholic Charities ND/ Hassing Scholarship purpose: To attract qualified, spiritually healthy social workers to rural North Dakota.

Deadline for application for 2007 will be announced in April 20, 2007. Return to Kim Hanson in the Department of Social Work.

Don Schmid Child Welfare Leadership Scholarship

The Don Schmid Child Welfare Leadership Scholarship provides a $1,000 scholarship for a second-year graduate student in social work who demonstrates potential for leadership in child welfare and excellence in scholarship. Application must include: 1) a resume, 2) a letter of recommendation from UND Social Work Faculty, and 3) a written paper (no more than 5 pages on a current child welfare issue). There is an expectation that you would meet with Don Schmid in Bismarck if you are awarded the scholarship. The deadline for application is April 20, 2007. Henriette Lund Scholarship

This scholarship was created to honor the memory of Henriette Lund. Ms. Lund was one of the first professionally trained social workers to practice in North Dakota. She was instrumental in the formation of the North Dakota Conference of Social Work in 1920 which addressed child welfare needs of that day and led to the establishment of the state's Children's Code Commission.

Ms. Lund held a series of positions in national and international social work before her death in 1984, at the age of 94.

A $475 scholarship is awarded to an admitted undergraduate admitted senior and a graduate student who has a high grade point average, high promise as a social work professional, and demonstrated participation in advancement of the profession. The deadline for application is April 20, 2007. Return to Kim Hanson in the Department of Social Work via email or drop off at the Department.

North Dakota Conference of Social Welfare Scholarships

Each year the NDCSW selects up to one (1) graduate and ten (10) undergraduate students for up to a $500 scholarship.  The scholarships are awarded at the annual conference, which is held in September each year.  The scholarship selection is based on the student’s interest in: 1) social welfare reform; 2) advocating for the underprivileged; and 3) being a leader in social welfare issues.  The student must write an essay of 1000 words or less about their interest in the three areas listed above; why you would like to be a member of the NDCSW; what benefits there are to membership in the NDCSW; what committee you would like to serve on; and, how you would like to or intend to become involved as a member of the NDCSW.  Students may access the NDCSW website at www.ndcsw.org for information on the organization and its committees.  Scholarship recipients will attend the fall conference late in September to receive their award.  Deadline for submission of this scholarship is March 31st.

Morris and Charlotte Thomte Scholarship

A $400 scholarship is available to an admitted undergraduate or graduate social work student who has: 1) a high grade point average, 2) high promise as a social work professional, and 3) demonstrated participation and personal involvement reflecting potential for a successful career in the profession of social work. The scholarship is alternated every year between social work students and nutrition and dietetic students. This scholarship will be offered again to social work students in 2007. The deadline for application is April 20, 2007.
