About - History

The concept for Studio One originated from, then UND student, Tom Buehring who desired some on-air television experience.  The university, at that particular time, did not have any programs in place dealing with the television industry.  Buehring approached Director of Television Barry Brode with the request and was asked to put together a proposal that would meet those requirements.  After several days, Buehring returned to Brode with a plan outlining a student-produced television show that would be similar to those that aired in larger markets.  Buehring and Brode then formed a team of staff and students to further develop the show.

The first episode of Studio One aired on February 5th, 1987.  The show began as a thirty minute live telecast, produced on Thursdays at 4 p.m. in Robertson Hall.  The first episode included two guest segments and a music video by Howard Jones.  Several years later Studio One became a morning show, produced at 7 a.m. on Fridays.  However, in 1997 the program moved to its current location, the Skalicky Tech Incubator, and began its current telecast schedule.

Studio One
is now an hour long news and information program telecast live at 5 p.m. on Thursdays at University of North Dakota's Television Center. The program is a one-hour broadcast similar to NBC's Today Show or ABC's Good Morning America. Students produce news, weather, sports and entertainment segments. They also interview guests about a variety of topics.

About – 20 Year Anniversary

Studio One will celebrate its 20 year anniversary during the 2007-2008 academic year! More than 600 students have participated in the program since its inception in 1987.  Studio One has also received more than 450 awards in various competitions across the Midwest.

"We are excited about our 20-year anniversary. It seems like it was only yesterday that we launched Studio One, " says Barry Brode, UND Director of Television. "Twenty years is an impressive accomplisment."

As part of the festivities, we wish to reconnect with alumni who have lost touch with us over the years.  Please update your alumni information – we love to hear from you!   Several special events as well as additions to the show are also currently being planned.  Please check back in the upcoming weeks for a schedule of events.

Come celebrate with us!

Internships – About

Studio One is a live television show produced by the University of North Dakota's Television Center. The Television Center offers an extensive internship program through Studio One. An internship with Studio One provides valuable on-the-job experience, a chance to make professional contacts and the opportunity to work on an award winning project.

Our internship program is offered during the fall and spring semesters and is open to University of North Dakota students from any major.

Our program is designed for students who can enroll for academic credit according to criteria set up by their department. We will work with you and your department to help you understand how to enroll for credit. We also accept volunteers, if you do not qualify for credit.

Studio One
provides opportunities for University of North Dakota students to gain practical experience in the communication industry. Students deal with every facet of creating a live television show by working in teams. Four teams create the show: News, Programming, Production and Marketing.

In the News and Programming teams, students are encouraged to tell stories visually. They are trained extensively in all aspects of reporting, writing, shooting, editing and anchoring. Students receive valuable, hands-on experience by working with satellite feeds provided by CNN Newsource, the nation's premiere newsfeed service. The news team is responsible for producing two, five-minute news segments and two sportscasts. The programming team produces feature stories, entertainment news and guests segments. The programming team works closely with the University of North Dakota's AeroSpace Network (ASN), a television studio, which provides a studio and equipment to produce Studio One weather segments.

The Production team also emphasizes effective visual communication. High production values are stressed to obtain professional visual images, whether it is communicating through electronic graphics, lighting, camera movement or directing.

The Marketing team focuses on promoting Studio One and hosting tours, which are conducted during each live show. The Marketing team works with the University of North Dakota's Office of University Relations to write and distribute press releases to promote each week's live show. The team also creates a newsletter, which is designed and written for alumni and friends.

The Television Center is part of the University of North Dakota's Division of Continuing Education, which promotes lifelong learning, economic development, and offers quality educational opportunities, programming, and services by extending the resources of the University.

Position held as an intern: Production Assistant, Camera Operator, Remote Photographer, Reporter
(News/Sports), In-depth/Discovery Reporter, Audio Operator, Assistant Director, Director
Year(s) that you were an intern: Spring 1993-Fall 1997

at Fred Meyer. Fred Meyer is headquartered in Portland and has 134 multi-department stores in Oregon, Washington, Alaska, Idaho, and Utah that offer one-stop shopping for a wide range of food, apparel, and general
merchandise products. Since the stores are spread out over these states, Fred Meyer uses a distance
education type of training to get their messages out to employees. I work in the Television Department (FMTV)

segments from shoots in the studio and on location. The broadcasts cover everything from product
demonstrations to displaying items in the stores. Employees at the distance sites can ask live questions
of the hosts, take quizzes and participate in surveys all in real time.

Exciting News: I started my new job at Fred Meyer in October 2004.  My wife and I are going to Paris in
February '05 to celebrate my golden birthday, which also happens to be my 30th birthday, so now I am old.

Year(s) that you were an intern: 1997-1999
Other alumni to contact: Anyone I worked with at Studio One.. give me a call or write me an e-mail. Would love
to hear what you're doing now.

Present Job: I am the weekend news anchor at Fox28. I also have the opportunity to produce my shows on the
weekend too. It's a lot of work, but also a lot of fun. I report the other three days a week. It's a nice balance to
report three days and anchor two. It keeps me on my toes.

Exciting News: Nothing too exciting right now. I'm just trying to get settled here in South Bend. The area is so
nice.. and there is so much to do outdoors. There's tons of lakes and rivers, so it's a lot of fun here in the
summer. Of course it's nice just being 45 minutes from Lake Michigan.

Other: If you're at Studio One right now.. learn everything you can. Take advantage of all the opportunities you're
given. If you try something and don't like it, move on to the next thing. Become as well rounded as you can..
and don't be afraid to try new things. I've been in TV just three years, but I've learned so much about how this
crazy business works. The most important thing to remember is.. don't burn any bridges. This biz is way too
small. Everyone knows everyone and it could come back and bite you in the rear.

a big market where we don't have to feed the "News Machine" as much as others in the market. We work with
a staff of 8 photographers. The "Big Boys" have 25+!

Exciting News: I have been in Seattle for 1 1/2 years. WOW. That ties my longest stint at one job. One of the
most memorable moments would have to be the 2 weeks I spent in Neah Bay, WA. waiting for the Makah
Indian Tribe to hunt and kill their first Grey whale in 70 years. I was one of about 20 people who witnessed
the "kill' from another boat about 50 yards away from the indian canoe. It was one of the most memorable
events, I have been lucky enough to cover.

City, State: Dallas, TX
Company Name: KDFW
DMA: 7
City, State: Dallas, TX

Position held as an intern: Photographer, Studio Camera, Editor
Year(s) that you were an intern: 88-90

Present Job: I'm a news photographer at KDFW in Dallas, TX! I shoot news stories to feed the "news
machine"! We turn 7.5 hours of news a day here in Dallas and sometimes I feel like I'm responsible for 7 of
those! The stories that took me a semester to complete at UND I can now turn nightly with very little notice --
just get it on the air! Since coming to Dallas I've traveled across the country covering the day's big store. Let's
see, I've hunkered down for a Florida hurricane, I've watched people dig through the rubble after their homes
and lives have been ripped apart by incredible tornadoes, I've seen floods and every other kind of disaster you
can imagine. I get to shoot fun stuff too. Texas is huge state with lot's of pretty things to take pictures of and
interesting people too! Sometimes I'm blessed and I get to leave the daily disaster story behind and
experience the wilds of Texas. It's a good life.

Exciting News: After leaving UND in 1990 I worked for KXJB's GF bureau as a photog then a one-man band.
I left that behind in 1994 to move to Colorado Springs, Colorado where I worked for over 4 years in the
shadow of Pikes Peak. Some of the most beautiful country I've ever seen! I worked at KOAA as a photographer
there and shot some of the best stories of my news career. The beauty of the mountains combined with the
excitement of a fast growing mid-sized city makes for good TV. I met my wife, Annette, in Colorado Springs.
She was a reporter and I was her photographer. Annette and I married January 1999. She brought 2 wonderful
children into my life. 8-year-old Stefan and his little sister Hannah. Annette's working in Dallas as a reporter,
helping the local WB affiliate launch their news operation in this market.

Other: I've been shoved and screamed at by people who've had a good point. Be sensitive. Remember that
you and your family come first.

Exciting news : I just graduated with my MBA from the Haskayne School of Business in Calgary! A tough two
years is now over. Heather and I are both excited for the opportunities ahead. And I can't wait to get back to
watch the Sioux play live!!!

Other : No matter what you do in your life, or what jobs you take on, always remember the lessons you were
taught at Studio One and UND. Like many others who are among our alumni, my career path has deviated
somewhat from my intended target. I have succeeded only when I have used principles like professionalism,
respect, teamwork, and integrity to get the job done. Studio One provides an excellent platform to hone those
necessary aptitudes. Good luck to all in your future endeavors!

organization in Cause Related promotions.  This job has truly provided me a unique experience and an
amazing inside look at the real Chicago.

Position held as an intern: Director, Photographer, Assistant Director, Reporter, Camera Operator
Year(s) that you were an intern: 09/2001 - 05/2003

Present Job: I am a Satellite Truck operator. That basically means that I set up and run the live shots that are
too far away or too important to risk jeopardizing due to an iffy live location. That could mean anything from a
location that has lots of power lines around it or something out of state like a hurricane or other disaster. I also
do uplinks at tons of sporting events and championships!

Exciting News: Nothing exciting except the new job.

Other: If you want to get into TV, Studio One is the best place to get started. After I graduated, I immediately got
job as a photographer at KTBS in Shreveport, LA. This was because I had an excellent resume tape thanks to
the skill and talent that I developed during my internship at Studio One! At KTBS I learned to love the high-
pressure spot news crunch situations like having only 20 minutes to edit a package in the field. Those skills
let me rise through the photography ranks at KTBS. Soon I became the go-to guy for some of the their most
important stories such as covering Hurricanes Ivan, Katrina, and Rita or stories that required good journalistic judgment. After three years there I made the decision to make a career shift and run satellite trucks. I know it
does not sound as glamorous, but I still get to be a part of all the cool stories and there is plenty of adrenaline
to make it interesting.

Other alumni to contact : I'd like to contact Jen Deidrich

Present job : I'm the government reporter. I cover all the politics, and city and county happenings. I'm also my own photographer. Working in television for many years helped me prepare for that.

Exciting news : Exciting news - I finished my Masters degree in Finance and Accounting last year. I have two girls named Kelsey and Alison. This year would have marked my 10th year in television news. I worked for KXJB in
Fargo, then KEYT in Santa Barbara, CA and then KKTV in Colorado Springs, CO. I've covered live stories like the
Texas Seven, the Colorado Fires of 2001, and the Democratic Headquarters in Denver on election night 2002.

Other: I never thought about what my television career would be like married to someone who moves around a lot
(Air Force). Every new place I went, I searched out a job and found myself starting at the bottom again every time. It would usually take me about 3 months to show them how passionate I am and I would move into the top slot. It
was like being straight out of college over and over again. So, enjoy a good thing when you have it - even if it is
small market. If I had it all to do over again, I would have focused more on quality (of people and relationships) -
not notoriety.

Exciting News: 2002 has been a busy year already as I spent the entire month of February in Salt Lake City as

Position held as an intern: Marketing Team
Year(s) that you were an intern: Spring 1998

Present Job: I manage the medical student section outreach program where I act as liaison between medical
students and the AMA in regards to membership issues. Travel to medical schools and help organize local health care events to enhance the extracurricular education for medical students that is offered through the AMA. This is a position that requires 85% of your energy towards personal interaction and communication. My experiences at Studio One helped me prepare for my current position by allowing me the flexibility to grow professionally within my own means as well as exposing me to numerous aspects of communication that are crucial in an everyday business environment. I have also learned that no matter how bad, a "clean" joke goes a long way.

Exciting News: I'm on the train back to school(or hope to be soon). I am applying to law school for the Fall of 2000. Cross your fingers...I am.

Other: Looking for a job right out of college can be difficult and definitely frustrating. Studio One, specifically the
staff, gave me the professional experience and the tools while still in school, that so many companies are looking for in a new employee.

Other: I encourage you to work on your news judgment especially if you're thinking of becoming a producer. It has
been one of the hardest things for me to 'learn,' because it's really something that's completely you. It's a
combination of your thoughts, beliefs, values, morals, and ethics, and something that will only build and become
better, with time and experience. Also, make yourself marketable. Not a day goes by that I'm not amazed at how far I've come, so fast. One last note: in TV, always expect the unexpected. Stand your ground.  Be yourself.  Work hard.  Smile.

The best of those moments was working with Adam Brase and Aaron Lindman every Friday morning preparing the weathercast for the show. We were the three amigos coming at ya via fiber optic! the best for Studio One! Keep up the good work!

City, State: Tempe, AZ
Company Name: Insight, Inc.
City, State: Tempe, AZ

Position held as an intern: Gee, what ones DIDN'T I have? Fall '90 News Director, Assoc. Producer, Producer & Technical Director, Member of Executive Staff
Year(s) that you were an intern: Spring '86, Fall '87, Spring '88,
Other alumni to contact: Gian Schauer, Gordy Christian, anyone of the old gang who remember being a half-hour show, remember having Dean O'Kelly give us the "Word of the Day" and the people who made Studio One first became an hour program! Please contact me, I would love to hear from anyone!

Present Job: I am an Account Executive for Insight, Inc. and consult with companies in the Midwest on their networking solutions, etc. That is my full-time job, you know me -- always have to have more than one gig! I also work part-time at KJZZ-FM radio in Mesa, AZ. KJZZ-FM is the largest NPR public radio station in Arizona and it is a wonderful station. I worked for her sister station, KBAQ-FM, doing classical announcing but an opportunity at KJZZ was available and I am back doing news again!

Exciting News: I left North Dakota in 1995 after receiving my degree from UND. It was very hard to say goodbye to everyone in my personal and UND family. I was fortunate to be part of UND's Plant Services (never thought that when we were working on the Plant Services video, I would be working with such a great team of people) and received the "Golden Hammer Award from Excellence" from LeRoy Sondrol. I think of everyone at the campus fondly and try to stay in touch with as many people as I can. I moved to Arizona and began working with Circuit City Stores, Inc. and after starting out in the sales department, I was shortly promoted to being a Corporate Sales Trainer. I loved every minute of training I did and Circuit City am sorry to report the Phoenix division I was working for closed in January of 1998 and I was back looking for work. That is what brought me to Insight and I must say, it is one of the most exciting and progressive companies I have ever experienced. The growth of Insight has been incredible and from all reports, the best is yet to come. I have been very fortunate. On my home front, I got married on April 1st, 1998 to Ron Madison. Ron is an Arizona native(not many people who live here are actually born here!) and he has a son named Tyler. Tyler is 7 yrs. old and is in the first grade. I am very blessed. On a more somber note, I was stricken with Aceptic (Viral) Meningitis in March 1998 and was very ill. Due to being sick for close to 6 months, I found that a lot is not known about the various types of Meningitis and that many people aren't able to find much support. I decided that since I had a personal story to tell, I am now the Western Support Assistant of the Meningitis Foundation of America and help others with their recovery. You can see my picture (along with Ron & Tyler's and my story on the Foundation's web site (www.musa.org/staff.htm). I am also going to be joining the Arizona Arthritis Foundation as part of their Awareness Committee. A bunch of us media-types are going to be getting together to see how we can help out such a fine organization. And not to be undone, I am also going working on my Masters in Education Technology from the University of Phoenix. I should be complete with the Masters in February, 2000. It has been an exciting process and a brand new program for the school. As busy as I am, I will always have time for those who I came to know so well at Studio One, please contact me and let me know how you are doing!

Other: My time spent with Studio One were valuable days indeed. I learned so much and was able to do so many things that some people only dream about. That focus got us through some tough mornings when it seemed nothing was working out quite right. My memories of where Studio One began and now to see what it has become makes me very proud to say I was a part of something very special. Working in the Corporate world, learning how to be part of a bigger whole is crucial. I learned that and so much more from my time with the program.

Present Job: I am the weekend Sports Anchor at KXJB-TV in Fargo. Have been with the company since 1997 beginning as a one-man-band in the Grand Forks bureau following the flood. My experience at Studio One prepared me for working my way to where I am now. Had a stint as the Weekday guy for almost a year until KVLY (11) bought us out and bumped me back to weekends. My main job is to cover the local, regional and pro scenes through shooting highlights, doing stories, and being an on-air personality everyone loves (at least I'd like to hope!!!)

Exciting News: I'm back on the diet train again!! After all, who likes to watch the fat guy on TV?! Still not married, but that may soon be changing. Hint, hint.

Other: Do all you can at Studio One. Don't just stick to one thing, learn as much as you can in as many different areas. To get in this business-- I don't care how good you are-- it helps to get in on the ground floor in some field and move up no matter what market you move to. I was pretty confident I'd find a weekday Sports Anchor job right out of college, sending tapes to Denver, Phoenix, you name it. Boy, was I wrong. Yes, even working in Fargo, you need to work your way up. So bottom line, learn it all, and take in as much as you can from all the teachers at the school. Year(s) that you were an intern : 1995-1996;1997,1998

Present job : I am the Regional Media Relations Manager for Qwest Communications. I really like my job. It's an incredible company with a great support system, work ethic and smart people. In 2004, I started two radio shows with a former news colleague.  It's one of those "for the fun of it" projects.  After working in TV for several years, I've always wanted to learn more about both radio and print.  It's been a fun adventure and now I'm looking and doing more freelance writing...

Exciting news : I became engaged in Paris in August '05 and got married August '06. My husband was actually my "UND college sweetheart" and long-time best friend. We live in the Minneapolis area and love to get up to Grand Forks and see the campus and our friends and family who live in the area.

Other comments : Studio One was an important part of my college experience because it introduced me to fundamentals of TV news. My years working in the news business gave me some of the greatest experiences in my life thus far.  The stories you tell will challenge you and the people you work with in newsrooms will become like family.  It's a job like no other...  But there is a long line to get in the door and you need to work hard in school.  Go for internships inside and outside of Studio One.  Find a mentor to help you get where you want to be.  Everyone reachs their professional goals with the help of many people.

Other: When else would I ever have had the chance to do a story about ostriches?! While I didn't go into the field of broadcasting my experiences at Studio One ingrained many important skills necessary to gain employment anywhere! I learned how to deal with the public, which is a huge aspect of my current job, become deadline orientated, and work as a team. I do a lot of interviews in this job, job interviews, but the interview training I got as a reporter in Studio One is helpful. City, State: Grand Forks, ND

Position held as an intern: DVE Operator, News Reporter, News Anchor
Year(s)
interned: 91, 92
Other alumni I would like to contact: Paul Kozar, Heather Murphy, John Priess

Present Job: I never really left Studio One! I am now the executive director of the project and love what I do. I also work as a producer/director for the UND TV Center. I teach students how to report, shoot video and work in a team on Studio One. As TV Center staff, I also make videos and design web sites for clients at the university. My job gives me a nice balance of TV production, news and leadership opportunities. Plus, the students are great to work with!

Exciting News: I interned in Colorado Springs after college at the U.S. Olympic Training Center. It allowed me to make a few contacts which lead to me freelancing at the '96 Atlanta Olympic Games. It was a blast!! I also got to interview Brian May, the guitarist from "Queen". This was a highlight for me as I am a huuuuge Queen fan and like to play guitar as well.

Other: I personally extend a welcome to all alumni to come back and take a look at the changes since you were involved. You won't believe how much we've grown. We are in a great new facility and the interns are as top notch as when WE were involved. Plus, I get to dabble in web page building. I look forward to seeing this page GROW!

Other: I still remember the look on Barry Brode's face after one of my first times as a technical director. The show was a total disaster, because I was hitting the switcher too fast after a fade. I hid all the projectiles after the show. That's probably why I'm not in the TV business!

Position held as an intern: News Director
Year(s) that you were an intern: 1989

Present Job: I'm a political reporter for Minnesota Public Radio - I cover the Minnesota legislature, Governor Jesse Ventura and other political stories. Never a dull moment with our Governor! MPR is the largest public radio network in the country, with a newsroom staff of about 70 people, so it's a challenging and stimulating place to work. I've worked for MPR for about 6 years, and prior to coming to the St. Paul newsroom, I spent 4 years at the network stations based in Collegeville, where I worked as Morning Edition anchor and later Bureau Chief.

Other: Get as much hands-on experience as you can while you're still in college - don't shy away from covering those dry city council and school board meetings, because they can give you valuable experience in learning how to sort out what's news and what's not. Position held as an intern: Reporter/Photographer/Floor Manager
Year(s) that you were an intern: 2003

Exciting News: I am finally living back in Bismarck.  I grew up there and most of my family still lives there.  I feel that being away from home for about 7 years while in college and while I worked my first job at WDAZ was a big challenge, but I made a lot of good contacts and I think my time away from home really helped my career.

Other: Learn everything you can at Studio One.  The staff there know what they're doing and will definately whip you into shape.  If you are willing to accept their help, and follow thier guidance, you will certainly be better prepared for whatever career you may choose to pursue.  If not for my experience at Studio One I know my career would not be where it is today.  When I came to Studio One I was only supposed to be a reporter but I ended up acting as my own photographer on all of my stories.  With the help of great leadership from people like Aaron Quanbeck I learned how to be a better reporter and landed a job with WDAZ TV right out of college.  I have a lot of respect for the folks who work at Studio One, their guidance and all their support is greatly appreciated.

Position held as an intern: Remote photographer, camera operator, reporter
Year(s) that you were an intern: Spring/fall 1996

Present Job: I'm responsible for webTV at DN.no/Dagens Naeringsliv in Norway. This is Norway's biggest business daily, and I've been here since the beginning of 2000. In addition to leading the continual development of the product I work as an video-journalist and online-editor. We're about to start daily newscasts on the web in early '01 and I will be one of the anchors. In '99 I was in Brisbane, Australia taking an MA in Media Production (TV/shorts). In between UND, which I finished spring '97, and leaving for OZ I worked as a news reporter/anchor/news-editor/VJ in two different local television-stations/affiliates in Molde and Toensberg, Norway.

Other: My experience after leaving UND is that it is the hands-on experience you can get as a student, that really matters when you're trying to get the first job. My recommendation to new Studio One participants is therefore to work hard at the TV Center. Don't bother pulling an allnighter for a biology exam! If you want to get into broadcasting/video production you're better off pulling an all-nighter or two at Studio One- making interesting stories, getting a good resume-tape, and, most important, getting that experience.

Present job : I began a new position in June with Altru Health System. I am the Development Director for the Altru Health Foundation which involves securing gifts from our constituents in support of local not-for-profit health care. I enjoy fundraising and believe in the mission of AHS and the philantrophy philosophy of the Foundation so it's a good fit. Previously, I was working at the UND Alumni Association and Foundation and before that, I served as Marketing Director for the TV Center.

Exciting news : We have a new home! Still in Grand Forks...and not new, just new to us...but we love it. Exciting news : The TV Center is a hard place to leave simply due to the caliber of staff and students I was blessed to work with, along with outstanding products and fun technology. I am enjoying my new position, however, and am thankful for the mentorship I received from many of the TV Center staff. It has helped make this transition much easier than I expected!

Other : The four themes stressed through the Studio One internship - Communication, Teamwork, Quality, and Professionalism - make all the differnce in the workplace. This is my first management position and I have fallen back on these principles when I've handled conflict or needed clarity. Position held as an intern: From 1995 to 1998, production assistant, remote photographer, floor manager, news reporter, in-depth reporter, discovery reporter, assistant news director, news anchor, assistant director, director, official "Voice of Studio One" :)
Year(s) that you were an intern: 1995-1998
Other alumni to contact: I would like to get in touch/keep in touch with any other Studio One alumni who might remember me! I would be more than happy to hear from ANY Studio One'ers out there!

Present Job: I spent a little over 3 years at KMOT-TV (NBC) in Minot, ND for a little over 3 years. In May of 2003 I moved to Bismarck, and now work at KFYR-TV (NBC). I am a commercial copywriter/producer. My job basically consists of writing and producing commercials. I work with the sales team and talk to the clients to see what kind of spot they are looking for. After writing the commercial, I go along with the photog. and basically coordinate the shoot, keeping track of shots, timecodes, and just making sure we get what we need. Then I go back and write the spot up for production, and produce the spot (what shots to use, what graphics/logos to use, what look to give it, etc...). I'll sometimes voice the spots myself as well. It's a blast! It might sound strange, but I really look forward to going to work every morning! It's fun to see an idea go from my mind, to the TV screen.

Exciting News: I actually wake up in the morning without an alarm clock!!! (sometimes)

Other: Oh wow, where should I start?? Always think positive in whatever you do! Do not be afraid to try new things! If something interests you, check it out! Studio One is a great place to try new things! Four years ago when I started Studio One, I never thought I would do all the things I did. You are limited only by your imagination! And do not be afraid to fail at something. You can only get better! Let's see...any other comments. Well, Monte's phone number will forever be carved in my mind...Yes, in the "old" days, we had to report to the studio at 4:00AM on Fridays...and if you have to wake up early, always, always remember to set two alarm clocks, because chances are it will snow like crazy!! There are way to many stories to tell! The first time we did a segment out in the new atrium was probably the most exciting moment I can remember with Studio One, because it had never been done before. And it was always fun when the switcher would suddenly "lock up" in the middle of the show, and Dale would have to re-boot. I have many, many great memories of my time with Studio One!

Exciting News: I live in a beautiful city in Oregon. For being stuck in a small town this is the way to go. They offer, hiking and biking and a nearby mountain with lots of skiing. I live with two of the anchors at my station. I have signed a three year contract. You're probably thinking three years at a small station? But the city is great and the pay is much better than stations with a one or two year contract... great owners!

Other: Words of wisdom... Try to get a feel for every position at Studio One, it will help you market yourself when you start looking for jobs. Learn to shoot. Most small market stations will require you to one man band.
Many entry level stations only have one photographer, so learn how to shoot before graduating... it helped me.

City, State: Manly West QLD Australia

Position held as an intern: Marketing Team
Year(s) that you were an intern: Fall 2002
Other alumni to contact: I'd like to contact all of my team members from Studio One that semester.

Present Job: I have just received my working rights in Australia as a provisional migrant in November of 2005 and so the past couple weeks I have been on the prowl for a job! It's been a long wait for this visa and I am anxious to jump into the Australian job market. Brisbane is a city of 1.6 million and there are plenty of opportunities for me. I hope to crack into International Education, working with international and study abroad students at one of the many universities in Queensland.

Exciting News: In August of 2005 I married my long-time Aussie boyfriend, Thomas Hansson in a ceremony in my hometown of Tioga, ND. Thomas and I met during my one-year study abroad experience in Australia during the 2003 school year. After our wedding in August and a couple weeks traveling in Thailand, we headed to Brisbane QLD Australia where we now make our home. Thomas is a fantastic graphic designer and just started a new position for a different firm here. We hope to stay in Australia for at least the next couple of years as we focus on our careers.

Other: I had a great time as an intern during Studio One's season thirty and always tell people what a great internship it was. The experience I received on the marketing team in press release writing, promotions, public relations, public speaking and marketing was incredibly valuable and I feel blessed to have worked with such great people and mentors. My favorite part of each Thursday was giving the tours--I used to be so nervous speaking in front of people, but by the end of the season I didn't want to give it up!

But I am now making a transition to work in southern France for one year as a missionary with Campus Crusade for Christ. Present Job: I am a self-employed writer and director - primarily for commercials and corporate uses. Current corporate clients are often companies like Intel, HP, Novell - usually high-tech and needing a video for a keynote speech or a product or brand launch.

Exciting News: Little known fact: A couple years out of college I self-produced, wrote and directed a kid's movie which ended up being picked up for distribution. More of an interesting way to spend our summer than a serious endeavor, you can now buy it off the internet (pretty cheaply, too) though I, of course, won't see a dime...

Other comments : I loved Studio One and left there with many friendships. If you have an opportunity to do more then one position there, I say go for it. The staff is great and extrememly helpful. The best advice I can give is to ask for help when you need it, either from the staff or a fellow intern. Also, asking for someone's opinion may lead you to hear something you don't want to, but never take it the wrong way as everyone at Studio One only wants to see you succeed. Present Job: Just a week after college graduation, I moved to the Cities to begin my career as a "Communications Associate" for the City of Eden Prairie. It's great!

Exciting News: Studio One is such a great opportunity for college students -- my only regret is that I didn't get involved earlier. Make the most out of your experience there!

Year(s) that you were an intern: 2004-2005

Present Job: I am doing marketing for Warner Brothers/Warner Home Video.  I am responsible for a 4 state region so I do quite a bit of traveling.  I am basically the "eyes and ears" for Warner Brothers.  I visit retail accounts and make sure Warner product is represented properly.  I also market and promote all of our new release product.  I absolutely love the traveling and every aspect of my position!  I also definitely love the trips out to CA to the Warner Bros. Studios!

Other comments : Studio One was definitely one of the most beneficial and vital parts of my college years.  It taught me so much about myself and what it takes to persevere in the real world.  It was certainly a lot of work but it was the main component of my college career that set me up for the future.  I would recommend taking full advantage of what Studio One has to offer.  I would say experience every aspect of the program and try new positions.  Try your best, be yourself, and HAVE FUN!!

Year(s) that you were an intern: 1993-95
Other alumni to contact: Anybody who wishes to contact me. I'd especially like to know where Hope Aadland, Patrice Lee and Kurt Daudt are now.

Present Job: I'm a stay-at-home mom, and I volunteer with our local Early Childhood and Family Education program, among other things. I've been married to Rob for 6 years now, and our oldest son, Garrett, is going to kindergarten this fall. His school has a *small* TV studio and students put on daily newscasts, so I am excited about the possibility of volunteering there. Son #2, Evan, is 3 and heading off to preschool.

Exciting News: The big news is baby #3 -- Spencer was born January 12, 2002. Looks like I'm the only girl in the house for good! (Unless we get a dog....)

Other: Studio One was the defining experience of my college years. The emphasis on professionalism in a collegiate setting made it much easier for me to transition to a "real world" situation. I dealt with a Mayor and City Council, County Commission, and a Regional Library Cooperative, and my experience with Studio One helped me to convince myself (and everyone else) that I was capable of handling tremendous social & political pressure in my job. Most of them were old enough to be my parents, so it was intimidating at first.

Company Name: Woodward Governor Company
City, State: Loveland CO

Position held as an intern: Video Tape Operator, Dale Wannabe
Year(s) that you were an intern: 1994, 1995

Present Job: I currently work as a field engineer for Woodward Governor. I specialize in the installation of control systems for hydro electric power plants. This means that I am never home but get to see many places that I never knew existed. I am currently on site in a small village of China called Taohuayuan Village. It is located in the middle of the Hunan province. I am working at the Lingjintan Hydro Electric Site and will be here until the beginning of January 1999.

Exciting News: I have walked on the Great Wall, learned how to drink Guiness in Ireland, hiked the Swiss Alps, been lost in Hong Kong, learned about true fear in El Salvador, fished for shrimp and octopus in Alaska, and fell in love in Costa Rica. Other than that I can not think of anything exciting that has happened to me.

Other: Studio One was a great experience for me. I work as an engineer but use the skills I learned at Studio One daily. When ever I am confronted with a situation that seems impossible I always visual Barry Brode teaching us the dots and lines trick at orientation. Thinking out of the box is something I am forced to do everyday and Studio One was one of my best teachers. Have to give much credit to Dale Ricke as well. He taught me much about how to trouble shoot and solve problems. I routinely use the phrase "Oh my" on the job site and try my best to teach all the persons I work with how to say it. To keep from rambling on Studio One is an incredible oppurtunity that I wish everyone could experience. A big thank you to Dale, Marv, Barry, Monte, and everyone of the other dedicated people on Studio One who taught me so much

Three years of blood, sweat and tears (ok, so not many tears) at WDAZ in the Devils Lake Bureau led me to believe there IS life after TV. I now work in the admissions office at LRSC, coordinating recruiting efforts. Enrollment was up this fall and I can't even take credit for it, maybe next year? I am an alumnus of what was UND-Lake Region and I'm glad to be back working there. I do miss TV and knowing me, will dabble here and there with a camera.

Exciting News: The new job is keeping me busy and so is the Mobile DJ Business. Not so many dances this time of the year, but May, June & July were sure a blur.

I'm thrilled with my job and I absolutely adore Colorado. Maybe I'll actually learn to ski this winter.

Other: Even if you choose not to pursue a career in television, your experience at Studio One will teach you some very valuable lessons applicable to any job, anywhere. You will especially learn how best to work with your teammates to deliver what's expected of you, even under the most stressful and demanding circumstances. My advice to those considering a Studio One internship is to spend at least one semester working on the live show. If you want to learn how to succeed under pressure, that's the place to do it

Present Job: After a fun filled, interesting four years in the TV business, I decided to hang up my microphone and move onto something a little bit more stable. I am now the Communications Manager for the UND Energy & Environmental Research Center (EERC), which I started in December of 2002. I am basically in charge of all media relations, marketing, and website management. So far its been very rewarding, fun, and challenging. The EERC is an excellent place to work!

Exciting News: My wife Michelle and I bought a new house in Grand Forks this October, which is filled with all sorts of little surprises - not to mention a lot of work! But life is great and its amazing what a difference a year can make. Michelle is also a former Studio One Alum. She is currently the Marketing Director at the UND TV Center.

Other: I loved my internship experience at Studio One. It was such a huge part of my college career, and it had an incredible impact on my professional career. My advice to students in the program now is to take every opportunity and do as many different things at Studio One as possible. The more experience you have, the better.
