Production Crew

JOB DESCRIPTION
Production Crew members are responsible for operating various pieces of equipment during the rehearsal and live production. Crew members are responsible for getting equipment and materials ready prior to rehearsal and shutting down and putting equipment and materials away after the live show.

POSITIONS INCLUDE:
Audio Operator
1. Operates Audio Control board during productions.
2. Sets up microphones and talent IFB’s, checks audio sources, operates audio equipment and provides general assistance during all phases of pre production and production.
3. Works with the director or assistant director to select musical bridges for each telecast.
4. Monitors live sources and ensure that proper VU settings are maintained.

Four Camera Operators
1. Composes camera shots.
2. Takes composition cues from the assistant director or director.
3. Assists the director in communicating with talent, when necessary.

Character Generator Operator
1. Operates the Character Generator during rehearsals and productions.
2. Designs and creates graphics that support program content prior to show day.
3. Prepares all title pages before rehearsals and makes changes as needed.

Floor Manager
1. Follows the program line up sheet and gives feedback to the cast and crew.
2. Cues cast members, verbally and/or with hand signals.
3. Helps production assistants with camera cables and monitor placement.
4. Directs or assists when set changes or cast changes are needed.
5. Directs or assists when lighting changes are needed.

Stage Manager
1. Works with the guest relations staff to escort guests to and from the studio.
2. Coordinates microphone changes during the live production.
3. Works with cast members to endure they are properly positioned for each segment of the show. This information is provided on a rundown sheet.
4. Assists the floor manager or production assistants with special set changes.
5. Works with the audio operator to make emergency audio changes on anchors and/or guests

Two Production Assistants
1. Operates studio lighting control system during the production, turning lights on and off as directed by the floor manager.
2. Assists camera operators by pulling camera cables and moving dollies.
3. Assists with props or any special effects.
4. Provides general technical support, when needed.

Technical Director
1. Operates the production switcher during rehearsals and productions.
2. Develops switching strategies with the senior director.
3. Executes appropriate switcher commands as cued by the director.
4. May need to switch program independently, when called upon by the director.

Teleprompter Operator
1. Loads the prompter program.
2. Operates the prompter system and adjusts speed control as needed.
3. If necessary, makes changes in the script during the production.

Video Operator
1. Starts recording machines as cued by director.
2. Rolls appropriate video segments as cued by director.

REQUIREMENTS
The following criteria will be used to evaluate candidates. Candidates must have experience in at least two of the following:
1. Strong communication and organizational skills.
2. Some experience as a camera operator. This includes an understanding of picture composition, production methodology and post-production.
3. Successful completion of courses that relate to this job description.

In addition, candidates must be available during the following time slots:

Thursdays 3:00 P.M. - 6:30 P.M.

Hours are subject to change depending on circumstances. The Production Team positions are one-semester non-paid appointments.

Assistant Director

JOB DESCRIPTION
The assistant director works as the primary assistant to the program director during pre-production, production and post-production. The assistant director provides leadership for members of the production crew, manages studio setups and strikes, and serves on the Studio One Board of Directors.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Pre-production:
1. Works with the director to manage the production team.
2. Works with the executive directors, senior director and production crew to coordinate live location feeds.
3. Works with the director to develop program scripts and weekly rundown sheets.
4. Works with the director to pre-produce video segments for the live show.
5. Helps the director prepare and conduct studio pre-production meetings.
6. Reviews all shots with the director and camera operators before rehearsals. This includes coordinating any special camera moves or blocking assignments with camera operators and the technical director.
7. Works with director to coordinate any technical changes that may occur after rehearsals.
8. Motivates, directs and provides feedback to student interns.

Production:
1. Presets camera shots before each take. This includes directing camera operators to proper locations and monitoring composition.
2. Assists the director with all camera move commands. These include bumper shots.
3. May assist the director with ready cues. These can include cues for lighting, audio/video, character generator or talent.
4. Assumes directorial responsibilities in the event that the director is unable to preform.

Post-production:
1. Responsible for coordinating camera strike with camera operators.
2. Assists the director with editing, if necessary.
3. Meets with the director and others to evaluate the show and the crew.
4 Works with the director to resolve technical problems. This may include developing new technical procedures before the next live show.

REQUIREMENTS
The following criteria will be used to evaluate candidates. Candidates must have experience in at least four of the following:
1. At least two semesters of production experience with Studio One.
2. Some experience as an assistant director helpful, but not required. This includes an understanding of picture composition, production methodology and post-production.
3. Successful completion of courses that relate to this job description.
4. Strong communication and organizational skills.
5. Experience in a leadership role.
6. Prefer ability to write, shoot and edit videotape.
7. Experience with computers and WordPerfect software.

In addition, candidates must be available for approximately 10 - 12 hours a week, including the following times:

Tuesdays - as assigned
Thursdays 3:00 - 6:30 P.M.
Fridays 9:00 - 10:00 A.M.

Hours are subject to change depending on circumstances. The assistant director is a non-paid appointment. Applicants who are available for both fall and spring semester are preferred, but consideration will be given to qualified candidates that are only available for one semester.

Director

JOB DESCRIPTION
The director is a student leadership position. The director serves on the Studio One Executive Council, the Board of Directors and provides leadership to the production team.
The director works with the senior director and is responsible for pre-production planning, directing the live show and supervising post-production activities in the studio. The director helps establish team goals, conducts weekly staff meetings and helps manage a budget.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Pre-production:
1. Assumes direct managerial responsibility for the production team.
2. Works with the directors, senior director and production crew to coordinate live location feeds.
3. Develops program scripts and works with other teams to produce weekly rundown sheets.
4. Works with the senior director to pre-produce video segments for the live show.
5. Conducts studio pre-production meetings.
6. Works with the producer and senior director to coordinate any technical changes that may occur after rehearsals.
7. Motivates, directs and provides feedback to student interns.

Production:
1. Assumes all responsibility associated with directing the live show.
2. Acts as a mentor to the assistant director.

Post-production:
1. Performs editing, if necessary
2. Meets with the senior director and others to evaluate the show and the crew.
3. Works with the senior director to resolve technical problems. This may include developing new technical procedures before the next live show.

REQUIREMENTS
The following criteria will be used to evaluate candidates:
1. Prefer at least three semesters of experience with the Studio One production team, with one of the three semesters as the assistant director.
2. Some experience as a director or assistant director. This includes an understanding of picture composition, production methodology and post-production.
3. Successful completion of courses that relate to this job description.
4. Strong communication and organizational skills.
5. Experience in a leadership role.
6. Prefer ability to write, shoot and edit videotape.
7. Experience with computers.
