Fall 2009 & Spring 2010 Research Assistant Opportunities



1. Operant research on the basic processes of learning

Duties: RAs are required to record data, handle the animal subjects (rats & mice), and monitor
equipment.  There are also opportunities for students to involve themselves in data analysis, data presentation, and writing of results for publication

2. Gambling research on the factors that maintain gambling and potentially contribute to problem gambling

Duties: RAs are needed to help complete ongoing research.  Students interested in heading their own projects are also encouraged to do so

3. Aging, Neuropsychology, Cross-Cultural Issues in Neuropsychology, Inhibition, Eating Disorders, Information Processing, Cognition, and Impulsive/Compulsive Behavior

Duties: Duties cover the spectrum and include calling/scheduling subjects, testing subjects, entering and scoring data, running statistical analyses, assiting in poster and/or manuscript preparation, presentation at local, regional and national conferences, write-up for possible publication

4. Eyewitness Testimony

Needed: 3 RA's
Topic: Helping jurors to better comprehend eyewitness expert testimony during a criminal trial
Duties: Administering the experiment

5. Gender and Physical Abuse History as Predictors of Adult Anxiety Reactions to a Public Speaking Evaluative Stress Paradigm

Duties: The RA would be responsible for keeping appointments with volunteer participants (this is essential), running participants through the experimental condition, administering and scoring a brief test battery, and entry of data into a database.

6. Health Risk Perceptions, Optimism/Pessimism, and Healthy Behaviors in Later Life

Current projects include examining perceptions of suffering acute health crises and engagement in preventative health behaviors (e.g., physical activity) and exploring the benefits of health optimism and consequences of health pessimism in older adults.

Duties: Assisting with all aspects of data collection: may include assembling interview materials recruiting participants, scheduling and conducting interviews, entering data, preparing results for presentation, assisting with papers for publication, etc.

7. Social Psychology Lab

Projects currently underway include examining perceptions of stalking, perceptions of domestic violence, and evaluation of the IMPACT self-defense program and evaluations of hate crime attributions. Duties of research assistants: Assisting with all aspects of data collection: may include recruiting participants, collecting and entering data, preparing results for presentation, etc.

8. Physical Abuse, Effects of Acute Alcohol Intoxication, and Lab Induced Stress and Aggression

Dr. King's students are conducting several studies on physical abuse history, the effects of acute alcohol intoxication, and personality features on laboratory induced stress and aggression responses. Research assistants will be needed for the spring, summer, and fall semesters of 2009. Assistants are needed for one to two days a week (4-6 hours/wk; times negotiable/flexible). RA's will register for two credits on PSYC 294. Lesser commitments (1 credit hour) will be subject to Dr. King's discretion.
