Anita Kemnitz Awarded for Employee Suggestion (February 2010)

Anita , Payroll Specialist in the UND Payroll Office, is the recipient of a Suggestion Incentive Award for her successful suggestion to purchase paper in bulk quantities.  Anita's suggestion was adopted by UND in January 2009, and produced a savings of close to $1800 for the first year.  Alice Brekke presented Anita with a cash award on February 4, 2010.  Congratulations Anita!!!

VPFO Employee of the Year (December 2009)
The 2009 Division of Finance & Operations Employee of the Year Award was presented to Mark Kobe on Tuesday, December 22.  Mark is a Building Services Technician Supervisor for the EERC.  Thank you for your great attitude and providing a positive work environment.  Congratulations Mark!!!

UCC Director Appointed to Early Childhood Services Advisory Board (December 2009)

Jo-Anne Yearwood, Director of the UND Children's Center, has been appointed to serve on the Early Childhood Services Advisory Board, which is charged with advising the North Dakota Department of Human Services. Her recommendation for this Board position came from the childcare licensors for Grand Forks County.

2nd Annual Summer Work/Travel Program (July 2009)

On Monday, July 6, President Kelley welcomed 22 international students to UND from China, Taiwan, and South Korea. The students will take part in the second annual summer work/travel program, a 4-week work study program. Many of the students will work full or part-time in Finance and Operations Division departments including Accounting Services, Dining Services, Housing, and Payroll.

UND Students Receive National Residence Hall Honorary Scholarships (June 2009)

Four student leaders received NRHH Scholarship Awards for their outstanding contributions to the UND residence hall system.

Raymond Schultz was awarded the Thomas Clifford Outstanding Residence Hall Leader Award for 2009. He received a plaque and a $2,000 award for his active involvement in the UND residence halls. Schultz served as the Association of Residence Hall's president for 2008-09 and will return for a second term. Schultz is a sophomore majoring in Art.

Samantha Curtis received a plaque and a $1,500 award for her contributions to residence hall government and recycling efforts in the halls. Curtis is a sophomore majoring in Air Traffic Control.

Matt Johnson received a plaque and a $1,500 award for his contributions to residence hall leadership and the programming board. Johnson is a sophomore majoring in Atmospheric Sciences.

Kevin Kraft received a plaque and a $1,500 award for his contributions to residence hall government. Kraft is a sophomore majoring in Chemical Engineering.


UND Residence Services Awards Derrick Hanson Scholarship (June 2009)
Daniel Ayd was awarded the Derrick Hanson Scholarship from the UND Department of Residence Services. Ayd, a junior majoring in Airport Management, was honored for his outstanding contributions to the residence hall system with a plaque and a $2,000 scholarship. He has served as a Resident Assistant for two years in both West and Swanson Halls and has demonstrated strong leadership skills through open communication and strong community development with his staff and residents.

Hamline Square Apartments to Open August 1 (June 2009)

The Hamline Square apartments near the Ralph Engelstad Arena are on schedule to open August 1st. For more details on the apartments, visit http://www.housing.und.edu/apartments/hamline.html.


New for Fall 2009, Block Meal Plans for Returning Students (June 2009)

New Block Meal Plans do not expire at the end of the week and are good until the end of the semester. Block plans are not restricted by meal zones, so students can use their meals at both dinner and extended dinner.

Option 1: 125 meals and $400 dining dollars per semester for $1,614.
Option 2: 155 meals and $150 dining dollars per semester for $1,655.


Meritorious Service and Ken and Toby Baker Award Winners Announced (May 2009)

Ten staff members were given meritorious service awards and one staff member received the Ken and Toby Baker UND Proud Award at the annual recognition ceremony for staff personnel May 19. The meritorious service award recognizes staff for excellence and dedication. They received certificates and checks. Four of the ten awards were presented to employees in the Finance and Operations Division. Winners posed for a picture with University President, Dr. Robert Kelley.

The Ken and Toby Baker UND Proud Award is presented to a staff employee who, through service and dedication to the University, to fellow workers, and to the community, exemplifies the qualities of commitment, loyalty, and pride in the University. The award includes a check, a plaque, and a traveling plaque for the department. The award was given to Pat Hanson, Director of Payroll.

Brekke Named UND Vice President for Finance and Operations (May 2009)
Alice Brekke
Alice Brekke as been named the Vice President for Finance and Operations at the University of North Dakota, UND President Dr. Robert Kelley announced today [Thursday, May 7].

"I am delighted to appoint Alice Brekke as the Vice President of Finance and Operations. Alice brings a depth of understanding of the University, as well as a wealth of experience and expertise, to the leadership of our finance, facilities and residence services units. She has served exceptionally well as UND's Budget Director and as the Interim Vice President for Finance and Operations. I look forward to her continued contributions as part of UND's leadership team," said UND President Dr. Robert O. Kelley.

Interim vice president for finance and operations since Nov. 1, 2008, Brekke has served as Assistant to the President since 1998 and Budget Director since 1992. She was Director of Budget and Grants Administration, 1993-1999, and Director of Grants and Contracts, 1988-1993. Prior to that, she was with the School of Engineering and Mines, 1983-1988, where she served as an accountant, Director of Accounting, and Assistant to the Dean and Director of Support Services. She served as an accountant for the UND Engineering Experiment Station, 1979-1983.

Brekke earned a BSBA in accounting in 1979 and a Master of Accountancy in 1987. Both degrees are from UND.
