Outreach Programs

 

We offer a variety of informational programs throughout the year. We will also work with you to design a program for the specific needs of your group. If you want more information on a program, or would like to schedule one, please stop by or call us!


Program Topics Offered Include:

Eating Disorders
What is an eating disorder? How do you know if you or someone you care about has one? Is it really possible to exercise too much? How can you help a friend who's dealing with an eating disorder? What can you do if you have an eating disorder? Just some of the questions that are addressed during this program. Resources for getting help are also introduced during this program.

Body Image
This topic has been getting a lot of attention in the past few years, especially the role the media plays in how men and women view themselves. In this program we challenge participants to explore their own body image and decide for themselves what factors are contributing to their positive or negative body image and the effects this body image is having on the rest of their life.

Assertiveness
What's the difference between assertiveness, aggressiveness, and passive-aggressiveness? This program helps participants identify these different styles of interacting in their own life and understand why two of these methods often lead to frustration. Participants are given an opportunity to role-play situations from their own life and incorporate passive-aggressive, aggressive and assertive responses.

Male & Female Gender Roles
This program explores the different roles that men and women have traditionally filled. Are these roles good/bad/neutral? What happens when men and women try out different roles in our society?

Safer Sex
Recognizing that all sexual activity carries with it a certain amount of risk, what are some steps we can take to make sex safer.

Understanding and Embracing Diversity
We all have a vague idea of what is meant by diversity (different cultures, different religious affiliations, different sexual orientations, etc.) but does that give us a complete picture of what diversity is? How do we view diversity? As an obstacle to be overcome, or as a gift that strengthens our lives?

Spirituality
What role does spirituality play in your life? What are some of the ways spirituality has enriched your life? What are some of the spiritual challenges you've faced? This program allows participants to both express their own experiences and learn from others in the group.

Club Drugs
The sad reality is that club drugs are here and they can have deadly consequences. In this program we give a brief introduction to the more common club drugs, the range of effects they can cause, and how to keep you and your friends safe.

Alcohol and College Life
Whether you choose to drink in college or not, alcohol is going to affect your time in college. Knowing how to stay safe in situations where you or your friends have been drinking could prevent some disastrous situations.

Nutrition
College is an exciting time, but it can also be pretty draining, so keeping your body well fed is extremely important. In this program we offer suggestions for ways to incorporate healthy foods into busy schedules, make healthier choices at fast-food restaurants, and briefly discuss some of the basic information about what nutrients our bodies need to stay healthy.

Relationships
Are you in a relationship? Is it a healthy relationship? Do you feel pressured to be in a relationship? In this program we address these and other questions, offering participants a chance to discuss their own opinions about relationships and how to build healthy ones.

Stereotyping
Most of us are aware of some of our stereotypes, but often we carry other stereotypes around with us that we are not aware of. How do these unacknowledged assumptions about other groups affect our day-to-day interactions and what can we do to bring these hidden stereotypes to light?

Stress Management
Heavy course loads, new friends, being far from home, all of these can be exciting, but they can also lead to a lot of stress. During this program we suggest ways to manage the stress that is an inevitable part of life and find more effective ways of dealing with stressors as they present themselves.

Time Management
This program is often presented jointly with the stress management program since managing time more effectively is one way to manage stress. We provide simple advice on how to organize your time more effectively so that you'll have time for the things that are really important to you.
