As the University of North
Dakota at Grand Forks implements an ambitious
strategic plan, it recognizes that responding
to the needs of "dual-career couples"
will be important as it competes for faculty
and staff in the national labor market. The
availability of employment for a spouse or domestic
partner is often a factor in the decision process.
This Web site provides links to potential employers,
as well as to other information that may be
of interest to the spouses or partners of candidates
for jobs at UND.
The community and the University
With a population of about 50,000, Grand
Forks is a community that offers amenities
and a life style increasingly rare in urbanized
America. Because it is a regional trade center
and a university town, it also offers job opportunities
that are not typical of a city its size.
Grand Forks and adjacent East Grand
Forks, Minn. (population 8,000), serve
a trade area that extends into two states and
Canada. Accordingly, the "Grand Cities"
are home to a well-developed business and professional
infrastructure of government entities, financial
institutions, courts and legal firms, health
care facilities, and enterprises of various
kinds. Of special note as major employers are
the Grand Forks Air Force Base,
the U.S. Department of Agriculture Human
Nutrition Research Center, the Grand Forks Public
School System, and Altru Health
Systems.
With a workforce of more than 2,600 full-time
employees and an enrollment of more than 13,000,
the University of North Dakota is the largest
institution of higher education in North Dakota,
South Dakota, Montana, Wyoming and western Minnesota.
Classified as a Carnegie Doctoral/research-intensive
university, UND is characterized by a solid
foundation in the liberal arts, a manageable
size, high-quality students and faculty, a varied
curriculum, nine colleges and schools, a widely
recognized program of graduate education and
research, rich cultural resources, and an outstanding
record of alumni support.
Academic divisions include the following:
Opportunities in
the region
Grand Forks is situated in the broad Red River
Valley of the North, which extends from Lake
Traverse in South Dakota 320 miles to Lake Winnipeg
in Canada. The U.S. portion –
one of the most productive agricultural regions
in the world – is traversed by
Interstate Highway 29. The highway provides
quick and safe transportation for Grand Forks
residents who wish to commute to Fargo
(70 miles away) or elsewhere
in the Valley. Major east-west highway links
– U.S. 2 and Interstate 94 (which intersects
I-29 at Fargo) also expand the region that dual-career
couples can consider for employment. The nearest
large cities are Winnipeg (150
miles) and Minneapolis-St.
Paul (320 miles).
Besides the University of North Dakota, three
other higher education institutions are located
in the immediate area: the East Grand Forks,
Minn., campus of Northland Community & Technical
College, Mayville State University (45 miles)
and the University of Minnesota-Crookston (27
miles). Opportunities also exist at the Grand
Forks Air Force Base’s education center
(14 miles). Other nearby colleges and universities
are listed in the links section to the left.
Assistance for new
faculty and professional staff
New faculty, administrators, and professional
staff are encouraged to contact their supervisor
if their spouse or life partner is seeking employment.
For example, the department head or dean may
write a letter of introduction to prospective
employers. See the links on the left to find
UND and other job opportunities.
