In addition to signing the “American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment,” UND already has some strategies in place to make a difference:
- University Place, apartment-style student housing (pictured above), was the first campus building in North Dakota built to meet various LEEDs standards. In addition to many "green" features, UND took steps to properly recycle the bricks, ceiling tiles, steel columns, carpet and old street materials from the previous building site before construction began on University Place.
- A comprehensive energy efficiency improvement program saves $500,000 a year.
- A lighting efficiency program with energy savings equivalent to 164,610 100-watt bulbs.
- The University has a number of environmental programs, including a wide variety at the Energy & Environmental Research Center. Research in the School of Engineering & Mines and in EERC focuses on the use of bio-fuels and other energy projects.
- UND also has programs in environmental engineering, environmental geoscience, environmental management, and environmental studies, and is home to the Environmental Training Institute and the Tribal Environmental Law Project.
- UND’s recycling program keeps nearly 500 tons out of area landfills each year.
