1990

The
most memorable event of the decade was the flood
of 1997. The cities of Grand Forks and East Grand
Forks were inundated, and UND, though flooded itself,
became the headquarters for the Federal Emergency
Management Agency, other agencies, and the city of
Grand Forks. A total of 72 buildings were damaged
in the flood, though quick action by the Facilities
crew minimized mold and water damage problems, allowing
the University to reopen fairly quickly.
President Baker resigned in 1999, and Charles Kupchella was named president. His tenure has been marked by a dedication to strategic planning and planned, sustained growth of programs, as well as enrollment increases and expansion of UND's research mission. |
