1. EXT. CAMPUS. DAY. Students walk to class on a typical college campus. One girl is hurrying faster than the others.

2. INT. CLASSROOM. DAY. A boy sits by the window in an empty classroom. He looks at his watch, then glances out the window as if looking for someone. Then he stares at the floor and drums his fingers on the desk.

3. INT. CORRIDOR. DAY. The girl runs down the hall of a classroom building.

4. INT. CLASSROOM. DAY. The boy is staring blankly at his hands on the desk. He looks up when the door opens and smiles when he sees the girl. She pauses just inside the door. When she sees him, she gives a weak and somewhat flustered smile before turning serious.

JEFF

Hi.

SANDY

Sorry...

JEFF

What?

SANDY

I didn’t mean to be so late.

JEFF

Oh. That’s all right.

Sandy walks slowly over to Jeff and sits in the desk beside him.

SANDY

Class ran overtime, and then I got tied up.

JEFF

That’s okay.

SANDY

Look, about last night...

JEFF

You don’t have to...

SANDY

I mean, I don’t usually...

JEFF

I know.

SANDY

What I mean is, I don’t want you to get the wrong idea.

JEFF

You’re here, aren’t you?

SANDY

Only to explain things. Last night was... strange somehow. I got... carried away. It won’t happen again.

JEFF

What do you mean?

SANDY

I mean... I... I don’t want you to keep calling me.

JEFF

But I thought...

SANDY

No. I can’t have it.

JEFF

Don’t you...?

SANDY

Look. I like you. You’re a very nice guy. But I just don’t have time for this kind of thing right now.

JEFF

But yesterday... and last weekend...

SANDY

That’s what I mean. I could have been studying, or working, or both. I need the money and I need my grades.

JEFF

I know, but everyone needs to let off a little steam now and then.

SANDY

"Now and then" doesn’t mean every night, or even every weekend. It’s like that’s all you ever do.

JEFF

I see. This doesn’t have anything to do with Frank, does it?

SANDY

That’s a whole different matter.

JEFF

It is Frank, isn’t it?

SANDY

Frank is sweet.

JEFF

Frank’s a jerk

SANDY

That’s mean.

JEFF

He’s also a joke.

SANDY

You just don’t know him very well.

JEFF

I know enough.

  Sandy stands up.

SANDY

Look. I’ve got to go.

JEFF (sullenly)

Go, then.

SANDY

Don’t be like that.

JEFF

Why not?

SANDY
(stepping towards door)

All right then, be like that. I told you I don’t have time for this. If you want, you can e-mail me.

JEFF(muttering to himself)

E-mail.

SANDY

And I’ll still see you in class, of course.

JEFF

In class.

SANDY (pushing the door open)

I’ll see you, Jeff.

JEFF

Yeah. I’ll see ya.

Sandy leaves. Jeff stands up and leans against the window, staring outside, thinking of the events of the previous few weeks.

DISSOLVE TO

5. INT. CLASSROOM. DAY. Earlier in the semester. The room is filling up with students before class. Jeff is sitting near the back. Sandy enters, taking the desk next to him, Jeff watching her with obvious interest. She, however, takes no notice of him as she sets out her books for class. Her pencil rolls onto the floor and Jeff reaches for it immediately.

JEFF
(trying to impress her)

Here.

SANDY (Pleasantly)

Thanks.

JEFF

Hi. I’m Jeff.

SANDY

I’m Sandy.

JEFF

I haven’t seen you here before.

SANDY

I haven’t been here before. I just got an override to add this class. They cancelled another one I was in.

JEFF

That was a lucky break.

SANDY

Except that I wanted to take the other class more. The teacher left to take a better job. Can’t say I blame her. (beat) Have I missed much the past two weeks?

JEFF

One quiz. Really easy. I got a C without even opening the book. But, hey, if you want a study partner I bet we could both ace the next test.

SANDY (smiles)

Maybe I’ll take you up on that.

JEFF

Great. How about Friday night?

SANDY
(checking her datebook)

This Friday? All right. Eight o’clock at the library.

JEFF
(somewhat surprised)

Library!? I... I’m pretty sure they’re closed Friday nights. But I know this great little coffeehouse with books on the wall. You... could pretend it’s a library.

SANDY (laughing)

All right. Write down the address and I’ll meet you there.

Frank comes in and sits on the other side of Sandy. Jeff Rolls his eyes and opens a book, pretending to read.

FRANK

Hi, Sandy. I didn’t know you took this class.

SANDY (playfully)

I didn’t. Until today. Besides, there’s a lot of things you don’t know about me yet.

DISSOLVE TO:

6. INT. CLASSROOM. DAY. (Same as scene 4) Jeff is still leaning against the window. He shakes his head bitterly, turns around and leaves the room.

FADE OUT

FADE IN

7. EXT. PARKING LOT. NIGHT. Jeff is about to get into his car when he sees Frank and Sandy getting out of a nearby car. He ducks down and watches them.
