As an outreach activity, local folks interested in participating in museum activities in the Department of
Geology and Geological Engineering are welcome to contact Joseph Hartman. Activities may include a number of
topics depending on the interest of the volunteer. Curation of existing collections is always an important
task. This work includes hands-on fossil and label review and computerization. This activity ultimately makes the
fossil specimens in UND's paleontological collections, and the paleoecological and geological time information
they represent, more accessible to other North Dakota scientists, regulatory personnel at other government agencies,
and those in comparative studies.
The department has a large collection that is appropriate for student projects and outside research. Papers continue to be published on plant, vertebrate, and invertebrate fossils in our departmental collections. A recent UND paleo alum, Amber Huntoon, helped initiate the volunteer program, and the department has employed a student, Trika Nelson, to assist in collection reorganization efforts. Other activities could include display case design, Web work, fossil preparation, and photography. Participation in field studies ("digs") is also possible. Recent field assistants have included Karew Schumaker (Minot State University) and Sarah Uthus (North Dakota State University).
