Chronostratigraphy of Western North Dakota uppermost Cretaceous, Paleocene, and lowermost Eocene strata. This figure (in Lund, Hartman, and Banerjee, 2002) represents my latest attempt (with the help of Allen Kihm, Steve Lund, and others) to put together all of the available information to temporally organize the nonmarine and marine strata on this interval of rock in the eastern Williston Basin. Note that the lithostratigraphic terminology of Fort Union Formation and members follows the heirarchy of U.S. Geological Survey, while Fort Union Group and constituent formations would follow the North Dakota Geological Survey. The use of Tongue River and Ludlow Members (or Formations) follows the use in Hartman (1999) and Kihm and Hartman (in prep.)

This view includes the uppermost Cretaceous Hell Creek Formation and lowermost Paleocene Ludlow Formation (Fort Union Group) at Pyramid Butte, Slope County, North Dakota (see next photo)
