Approaching the National Standards Through
Concert Band Literature

I. Read the hand-out on the "National Standards."

Note the following:
(1) the difference between an achievement and a content standard,
(2) how they are organized into grade level clusters, and
(3) the difference between proficient and advanced categories.

II. Go to the JW Pepper web site

Find pieces in which you could address Standards 2, 5, 6, 8, and 9 (five pieces in all, one per Standard). For Standard 9, choose a piece in which you could address understanding music in relation to culture.
