• EXAMEN FINAL (Comprensión): 40 puntos.  The first part of the Final Exam will be in class today in M-308.  It will consist of 20 statements that you will have to determine to be either true (Cierto [Certain]) or falso (Falso).  You will circle either a "C" or an "F" on an answer sheet I will give you.  To study for this part review the vocabulary of Spanish 101:  description of people, days of the week, colors, numbers, weather expressions, family relationships, comparisons, etc. as examples.  There will be Bonus questions from Bonus Day on the reverse side of the answer sheet.
• The remainder of the Final Exam is either December 11 at 9 AM in Gamble-1 (if you signed up for it) or December 18 at 8 AM in Gamble-5.

• In class I will have a worksheet with many more sample questions similar to those we did in class on Monday.  I will give more detail on possible questions for both the Listening/Comprehension part (on Thursday), and for the Grammar part (either Fri. 12/11 or Fri. 12/18).  I will give whoever attends hints on how to answer multiple choice questions, and what to look for to help you answer correctly.  Since this class is optional, there is no penalty if you do not attend, other than not receiving the handout and the hints.
• AVISO #1:  The next class you are required to attend is for the Listening/Comprehension part [40 points] of the Final Exam, which will be on Thursday Dec.10 at the regular class time in M-308.  This part of the exam will be Cierto/Falso [True/False].  There will be 20 statements, worth 2 pts.each, similar to the examples I gave in class on Monday.  The main emphasis of this part of the Final is vocabulary and comprehension.
  
• AVISO #2:  For the Grammar part [160 points] of the Final Exam you have two choices: either the early version Dec. 11, 9 AM to 11 AM in Gamble-1, or the regularly scheduled day, Dec.18, 8 AM to 10 AM, place yet to be determined.  If I know that place on Thursday the 10th, I'll announce it in class.

• In Capítulo 9 "blue pages" read 9.3, text pp.331-332, before coming to class.  This is a new tense [IMPERFECT TENSE] that refers to the past, but which views an action as "on-going", for example, "At 9 PM last night I was watching the television."  It is the most regular tense in Spanish, and has only three irregular verbs.  All of the Spanish intructors are supposed to at least touch on this tense in Spanish 101.
• Read over, and practice the 12 Questions-->Answers: Capítulo 7 that you received in class. We will figure out what each question means in English, and what the answer means.  Then we will practice variations of the grammar in each question.
• In your notebook answer Ejercicios 8 and 9, pp.272-273.  When done, correct your answers using Appendix 4, p. A-15 in the back of your textbook.  If you made mistakes, return to the grammar explanation to figure out what you didn't understand.

SECTION TEST #3 (Cap. 5, 6)  100 points

• This test will have five parts.  Each section is described below.  Take the "Pre-Test" below to see if you understand the material.  To see the correct answers click -->  RESPUESTAS.
  A. Comprensión.  I will ask 6 questions, each one beginning with one of the interrogative words (¿cuándo?,  ¿dónde?, ¿a quién? etc.).  You have to give a short (one or two word) response that answers the interrogative.  I will model these questions after questions in the Questions-->Answers lists for the Chapter 5 and for Chapter 6.

Presente --> Pretérito.  I will give you 12 sentences that have a Present Tense verb, which is underlined.  You have to write that verb in the Preterite above the underlined word.  ¡OJO!  I may use "shoe-verbs", which are NOT irregular in the Preterite.  We practiced this in class.  Assume that I will test all of the forms.  You are responsible for the whole conjugation, both singular and plural.  See summary chart in 7.1, p.265.
      5- Mis amigos venden su carro.  (they sold)
      6- A la profesora le pregunto en español.  ([preguntar] - I asked)
      7- No subimos la escalera.  (we climbed)

  C. Comparaciones.  I will give you the elements (words) to form 4 comparisons that I will give in English.  You must take the elements and add the proper pattern of words for the comparisons.

Use the tan [ADJ.] como pattern to express that someone is or isn't "as tall/nice/happy as" another person.  For example, (p.3) Rafael no es tan alto como doña Rosita.

  A. Comprensión.  Each of the 5 questions in this part will begin with an interrogative word, which you must answer with a short answer (not a sentence).  Brackets mean you will hear but not see the questions.

• Memorize the answers to the questions in the list Questions-->Answers for Chapter 4  to be familiar with them.  All of the grammar we studied appears at least once in the list.  We will practice these answers and some alternate answers during class.
• Review again the irregular verbs pp.170-172, and the reflexive verbs p.174.  You will have to know which ones are e-->ie verbs, which ones are o-->ue verbs, and which ones are e-->i verb.  There is another identifiable group:  the verbs whose YO-form ends in "--go"  e.g. "tengo".
  
• There will be a new section on your Section Test which I will call "Buscaerrores" ("Look for the errors"). I will only use grammar from old chapters (--> ones before Chapter 3). The 4 sentences we practiced on Thursday are:

  This test will have five parts.  Each section is described below.  Take the "Pre-Test" below to see if you understand the material.  To see the correct answers click -->  RESPUESTAS.
  A. Comprensión.  This part is the same as the first part of the quiz for Chapter 1.  I will ask 8 questions, each one beginning with one of the interrogative words (¿cuándo?,  ¿dónde?, etc.).  You have to give a short (one or two word) response that answers the interrogative.  I will model these questions after questions in the Questions-->Answers lists for the Pasos and Chapter 1 and for Chapter 2.
  B. Verbos irregulares.  I will give you a pronoun or name, and an infinitive, and you must conjugate IR and "shoe verbs" QUERER and PREFERIR to the correct forms. There will be 5 forms to write for each verb.

       15- ¿En qué año murió Nikita Khrushchev?  (--> 1971)
       16- ¿A qué hora es su (tu) primera clase los martes?
  E. Vocabulario.  You will have to match two separate columns of Spanish words to their English meanings.  Each column will have three English meanings with no Spanish match.  I will use vocabulary that we repeated in class, mostly from the pages with drawings.  I will also include many of the interrogative words as vocabulary.  The vocabulary words for this test are found:

• Read over and practice the 15 Questions-->Answers: Capítulo 2 (#31-45) that you received in class.  As ususal these questions cover all of the grammar that appears in Chapter 2, along with how to answer various questions.  On Wednesday we will practice questions having to do with your academic schedule, and then questions with querer (ie) and preferir (ie) with an infinitive.  To hear a recording of these questions with my voice, sign onto Blackboard, then under the Tools menu (on left, in the narrow, green column) click on Communication, then click on Voice Podcaster at the bottom.  Click on Q-->A_Capítulo 2 to hear the recording, or on one of the other two for the Pasos and Chapter 1.

• IN CLASS:  ASSIGNMENT 1 [25 pts.]  I will give you a worksheet that practices adjective agreement.  After a short review you will have use your textbook and write out 24 adjective phrases (e.g. una foto vieja) with the three types of adjectives in Spanish (e.g. rubio, inteligente, and trabajador[a]).  You will be graded on the word order of each phrase, and the noun and adjective endings.  If you miss this class day, you will have to come to my office to do the assignment there; it will be treated as a late assignment.
• Memorize the vocabulary of weather, text p.99.

• TO HAND IN:  On a piece of paper with a clean edge (no spiral ripped edges) write out all six forms of the Present Tense of the regular verbs describir (to describe), cenar (to have dinner) and correr (to run).  We will practice them and then conjugate 3 other regular verbs in class, and you will hand the paper in for a Class Participation grade.  This exercise will lead into making up questions with the interrogative words.
  
• Memorize the meanings of the 9 interrogative words at the top of p.79.

For Friday September 11, 2009

• RECITACIÓN (Participación).  Be prepared to answer the Pasos questions on the paper given to you in class.  This may be conducted over two class days.  If you are absent and therefore don't answer a question, you will be given a "-" (minus) grade for that recitation.
  GRADING of Recitation: The best "grade" [~A] will be given if you answer correctly, with good pronunciation, without using the paper.  A slightly lower grade [~A-] is earned if you only have to glance at your paper.  If you have to read the answer from the paper the grade will be lower [~B or C] depending on whether you answered confidently or if you made errors.  Being original (= giving a different but gramatically correct answer) will be rewarded.  Poor pronunciation will tend to lower your grade.  During the semester I will record all of these grades, use a formula, and generate a % grade for the 70 points for Class Participation.

• In Capítulo 1 "blue pages" read 1.2 (the -er and -ir verb endings), 1.1 and 1.3, text pp.76-79 before coming to class.
  

For Wednesday September 9, 2009

• Before starting the Quiz, we will practice answering questions from the Pasos.  (These questions will lead to an in-class Recitation on Thursday and Friday.)

• QUIZ (Pasos A, B, C)  25 points

  This Quiz will have four parts.  The first three test oral comprehension:  you will hear but not see what I say.  The last part is just written.  Each section is described below, and a sample question is given for each one.  Words shown in brackets will be spoken by Mrs. Lee. 
    A. ¿Quién es?  You must identify a person being described. I will use an overhead projection to show you an array of people.  For example, look at the drawing in your text p.3.
  You hear [Lleva una falda corta.]  On the line on your quiz you would write "Graciela".
    B. Los números.  I will say a total of ten numbers in Spanish, and you have to write the numerals that correspond to what I said.  For example, if I said [setenta y nueve] you would write "79" on the line.  ¡OJO! (Careful!) I will not accept the words "setenta y nueve" as a correct answer;  you must use numerals.
    C. Los colores.  On your quiz there will be two groups of colors listed.  I will say a noun and you will have to write the correct form of the adjective that matches the gender and number of the noun.  For example, on your paper you see Group 1:  amarillo/a         Group 2:  gris
  If I said [una falda, Group 1];  you would write "amarilla"; if I said [los pantalones, Group 2] you would write "grises".  There will be a total of seven colors to choose from; after a color is used once, it may not be used again.
    D. Agreement.  In this section you will have to write the proper form of an adjective chosen from a list of adjectives that describe people.  In the last three answers you will have to use the correct form of SER (es, son) in addition to the adjective.  For example, the list contains the adjectives  alto/a   and    trabajador(a).  You see Ramón es ______ you could write either "alto" or "trabajador". Or you see Las chicas ____________ you could write either "son trabajadoras" or "son altas"; the verb is written because it was missing in the second example.  Each adjective may be used only once.

For Friday September 4, 2009

• Memorize p.25 the parts of the body.
• Memorize p.26 descriptive words for persons, including trabajador(a) from the list on p.27.  Make sure you are comfortable with the various adjective forms of the three groups [1- rubio/-a,  joven, trabajador(a)] and the plurals of those words.
• In your notebook answer Ejercicio 8, p.36.  When done, correct your answers using Appendix 4, p. A-13 in the back of your textbook.  If you made mistakes, return to the grammar explanation to figure out what you didn't understand.
• In Paso C "blue pages" read C.1, C.2, C.3 and C.4, text pp.48-53 before coming to class.

For Thursday September 3, 2009

• Memorize p.24 new vocabulary words imbedded in Actividad 5, and the numbers 40, 50 and 60 (and the pattern for numbers).
• Memorize p.25 the parts of the body.
• Memorize p.26 the descriptive adjectives for people.  [As you study the words, notice the ending so as to review adjective agreement at the same time.]
• In your notebook answer Ejercicios 4 and 5, p.34.  When done, correct your answers using Appendix 4, p. A-13 in the back of your textbook.  If you made mistakes, return to the grammar explanation to figure out what you didn't understand.
• Read the "blue pages" B.5 (more on adjective agreement) pp.35 - 36.

For Wednesday September 2, 2009

• Memorize p.23 things in the classroom, and the Spanish word Hay (There is, There are, Is there?, Are there?).
  
• Read all of the "blue pages" B.1 through B.4 (B.5 to be assigned later):  pp.31 - 34.
• In your notebook answer Ejercicios 1 and 2, p.32.  When done, correct your answers using Appendix 4, p. A-13 in the back of your textbook.  If you made mistakes, return to the grammar explanation to figure out what you didn't understand.

For Monday August 30, 2009

• Memorize p.5 the numbers 0 - 39.
• Memorize p.7: greetings, what to say when you meet someone, and how to say good-bye.
• Review the alphabet p.14, and figure out how to spell your first name outloud in Spanish.
• Continue to study and review the vocabulary p.2, p.3 and p.4 (giving your name, description of persons, colors and articles of clothing).
  

For Friday August 28, 2009

• Read all of the "blue pages" A.1 through A.4 (A.5 is skipped) for Paso A:  pp.11 - 19.  Section A.4 is especially important. 
  
• In your notes answer Ejercicios (exercises) 5 and 6, pp.19-20.  When done, correct your answers using Appendix 4, p. A-13 in the back of your textbook.  If you made mistakes, return to the grammar explanation to figure out what you didn't understand.
• (Assigned previous day) Memorize p.2 in Paso A the two different ways to ask someone's name.
• Memorize p.3 the descriptive adjectives.
  
• Memorize p.4 the colors and articles of clothing.
