• In your notes conjugate all 6 forms in the Preterite for the following 3 regular verbs that you have never seen.

• In your notes translate to Spanish the following sentences that refer to the drawing on p.3 of your text.  Use the más [ADJ.] que pattern to express that someone is "taller/shorter/nicer than" another person.  For example, (p.3) Pedro es más alto que don Eduardo.
  
   1- Graciela is taller than Rafael.
   2- Doña Rosita is fatter than Graciela.
   3- Paula is thinner than don Eduardo.
In Grammar 6.2, text p.238 reread the tan [ADJ.] como pattern to express that someone is or isn't "as tall/nice/happy as" another person.  Using p.3 drawing we can say Rafael no es tan alto como doña Rosita.
How would you say the following in Spanish?

   5- Doña Rosita is as tall as Graciela.

• In Capítulo 6 "blue pages" read 6.3, text pp.239-240, AND in Chapter 7 read 7.1 [the chart] p.265 before coming to class.  The reason I refer you to Chapter 7 is because Chapter 6 blue pages only include the singular endings, but I intend to take the whole conjugations, both singular and plural.
  
• REMINDER:  In the Workbook answer and submit either electronically or by paper copy Activities 5.1A, and 5.1B  ("Actividades escritas") in Chapter 5.

• Memorize the answers to the questions in the list Questions-->Answers for Chapter 4  to be familiar with them.  All of the grammar we studied appears at least once in the list.  We will practice these answers and some alternate answers during class.
• Review again the irregular verbs pp.170-172, and the reflexive verbs p.174.  You will have to know which ones are e-->ie verbs, which ones are o-->ue verbs, and which ones are e-->i verb.  There is another identifiable group:  the verbs whose YO-form ends in "--go"  e.g. "tengo".
  
• There will be a new section on your Section Test which I will call "Buscaerrores" ("Look for the errors"). I will only use grammar from old chapters (--> ones before Chapter 3). The 4 sentences we practiced on Thursday are:

  This Quiz will have four parts.  The first part is oral comprehension:  you will hear but not see what I say; the other three parts are  written.  Each section is described below. Take the "Pre-Quiz" below to see if you understand the material.  To see the correct answers click -->  RESPUESTAS.
    A. Comprensión.  Each of the 5 questions in this part will contain one of the prepositions of location that we practiced in class.  You must give a short answer (-->the place) for each question.  I will prepare a drawing to use for the quiz.  To practice this section, use the drawing on p.128 in your text; ignore the locations with numbers. (Notice where the "X  Usted está aquí" is at the bottom.)  The brackets below remind you that you will hear but not see the questions in this part.

• Read and practice the Questions-->Answers: Capítulo 3 (#46-61), which you received in class.  In preparation for the quiz on Chapter 3, we will practice the answers given, and then practice some variations on those answers.  Information about the quiz will be given in class.  To practice the pronunciation of these questions, listen to my reading of the questions and answers:  go to Blackboard, and click on "Communication" (on the left on my screen), then click on "Voice Podcast" toward the bottom.  Click on Chapter 3, the fourth one down.
  
• Please copy Assignment #2 and bring the paper to class. There we will make sure we understand the questions before answering them.  For the 9 AM class, Assignment #2 will be due on Wednesday Oct. 14 (the day after the quiz).

• SECTION TEST #1 (Pasos, Cap. 1, 2)  100 points

  This test will have five parts.  Each section is described below.  Take the "Pre-Test" below to see if you understand the material.  To see the correct answers click -->  RESPUESTAS.
  A. Comprensión.  This part is the same as the first part of the quiz for Chapter 1.  I will ask 8 questions, each one beginning with one of the interrogative words (¿cuándo?,  ¿dónde?, etc.).  You have to give a short (one or two word) response that answers the interrogative.  I will model these questions after questions in the Questions-->Answers lists for the Pasos and Chapter 1 and for Chapter 2.
  B. Verbos irregulares.  I will give you a pronoun or name, and an infinitive, and you must conjugate IR and "shoe verbs" QUERER and PREFERIR to the correct forms. There will be 5 forms to write for each verb.
       1- Usted no ____ a misa con nosotros.  (ir)
       2- Yo ____ a leer Capítulo 2.  (ir)

Concordancia (Adjective agreement).  I will give you a noun and the masculine, singular form of an adjective.  You will have to write the PLURAL form of those words.  I will use the same vocabulary as appeared on Assignment #1, but I reserve the right to use different combinations for the phrases.  There will be 7 plural phrases to write.  Look at the model.

  E. Vocabulario.  You will have to match two separate columns of Spanish words to their English meanings.  Each column will have three English meanings with no Spanish match.  I will use vocabulary that we repeated in class, mostly from the pages with drawings.  I will also include many of the interrogative words as vocabulary.  The vocabulary words for this test are found:

• Read over and practice the 15 Questions-->Answers: Capítulo 2 (#31-45) that you received in class.  As ususal these questions cover all of the grammar that appears in Chapter 2, along with how to answer various questions.  On Tuesday we will practice questions having to do with your academic schedule, and then questions with querer (ie) and preferir (ie) with an infinitive.  To hear a recording of these questions with my voice, sign onto Blackboard, then under the Tools menu (on left, in the narrow, green column) click on Communication, then click on Voice Podcaster at the bottom.  Click on Q-->A_Capítulo 2 to hear the recording, or on one of the other two for the Pasos and Chapter 1.

• AVISO #1 (¡MUY IMPORTANTE!)  In class I mentioned the wrong date for the Section Test.  The correct date is Thursday October 1.  Sorry for the error.
  
• Please bring to class to hand in to me a paper (with a clean edge) that lists your academic schedule.  Model this after the schedule on p.89, with the times in the left-hand column, and the days (lunes --> viernes) across the top.  List the courses in Spanish as we practiced in class.
• IN CLASS:  ASSIGNMENT 1 [25 pts.]  I will give you a worksheet that practices adjective agreement.  After a short review you will have to write out 24 adjective phrases (e.g. una foto vieja) with the three types of adjectives in Spanish (e.g. rubio, inteligente, and trabajador[a]).  You will be graded on the word order of each phrase, and the noun and adjective endings.  If you miss this class day, you will have to come to my office to do the assignment there; it will be treated as a late assignment.

• QUIZ (Capítulo 1)  25 points

  This Quiz will have four parts.  The first part is oral comprehension:  you will hear but not see what I say; the other three parts are  written.  Each section is described below. 
    A. Comprensión.  You must give a short answer for the interrogative word in each question.
    B. Interrogative words.  You must write a question that would produce a short answer.  I will indicate what the short answer should be by underlining the words.  This is as we practiced in class.
    C. Present Tense of Regular Verbs.  I will give you a pronoun or name, and an infinitive, and you must conjugate 9 verbs (-ar, -er, -ir) to the correct form.
    D. Question --> Answer.  You must answer questions in full sentences in Spanish.  The interrogative words will be used.  I will model the questions after the questions in Capítulo 1 questions.

• Memorize the new vocabulary (infinitives and infinitive phrases) text p.66, and in the yellow and green chart at the top of p.67.  I will ask you questions (for example, ¿A Ud. le gusta salir a bailar?  -->Sí, me gusta salir a bailar con mi novia [girlfriend]).
  
• AVISO:  There will be a Recitation on the Questions-->Answers for Chapter 1 on Monday before the quiz.  If not all students are able to answer in 20 minutes, the Recitation will continue to the next class day.

• In Capítulo 1 "blue pages" read 1.4 and 1.5, text pp.80-83 before coming to class.
• TO HAND IN:  On a piece of paper with a clean edge (no spiral ripped edges) write out all six forms of the Present Tense of the regular verbs describir (to describe), cenar (to dine, have dinner) and correr (to run).  We will practice them and then conjugate 3 other regular verbs in class, and you will hand the paper in for a Class Participation grade.  This exercise will lead into making up questions with the interrogative words. [NOTE! This assignment has been changed slightly from when it was originally published.]
  
• Memorize the meanings of the 9 interrogative words at the top of p.79.

For Thursday September 10, 2009

• RECITACIÓN (Participación).  We will finish answering the Pasos questions on the paper given to you in class.
• Memorize the endings for the regular -ar verbs (p.54) and the -er and -ir verbs (p.76).  Be prepared to conjugate practicar, comprender, and abrir (to open) in class.

• RECITACIÓN (Participación).  Be prepared to answer the Pasos questions on the paper given to you in class.  This may be conducted over two class days.  If you are absent and therefore don't answer a question, you will be given a "-" (minus) grade for that recitation.
  GRADING of Recitation: The best "grade" [~A] will be given if you answer correctly, with good pronunciation, without using the paper.  A slightly lower grade [~A-] is earned if you only have to glance at your paper.  If you have to read the answer from the paper the grade will be lower [~B or C] depending on whether you answered confidently or if you made errors.  Being original (= giving a different but gramatically correct answer) will be rewarded.  Poor pronunciation will tend to lower your grade.  During the semester I will record all of these grades, use a formula, and generate a % grade for the 70 points for Class Participation.
  
• In Paso C "blue pages" read C.5 (the -ar verb endings), text p.54 before coming to class.
• In Capítulo 1 "blue pages" read 1.2 (the -er and -ir verb endings), 1.1 and 1.3, text pp.76-79 before coming to class. 
  

For Tuesday September 8, 2009

• Before starting the Quiz, we will practice answering questions from the Pasos.  (These questions will lead to an in-class Recitation on Wednesday and Thursday.)

• QUIZ (Pasos A, B, C)  25 points

  This Quiz will have four parts.  The first three test oral comprehension:  you will hear but not see what I say.  The last part is just written.  Each section is described below, and a sample question is given for each one.  Words shown in brackets will be spoken by Mrs. Lee. 
    A. ¿Quién es?  You must identify a person being described. I will use an overhead projection to show you an array of people.  For example, look at the drawing in your text p.3.
  You hear [Lleva una falda corta.]  On the line on your quiz you would write "Graciela".
    B. Los números.  I will say a total of ten numbers in Spanish, and you have to write the numerals that correspond to what I said.  For example, if I said [setenta y nueve] you would write "79" on the line.  ¡OJO! (Careful!) I will not accept the words "setenta y nueve" as a correct answer;  you must use numerals.
    C. Los colores.  On your quiz there will be two groups of colors listed.  I will say a noun and you will have to write the correct form of the adjective that matches the gender and number of the noun.  For example, on your paper you see Group 1:  amarillo/a         Group 2:  gris
  If I said [una falda, Group 1];  you would write "amarilla"; if I said [los pantalones, Group 2] you would write "grises".  There will be a total of seven colors to choose from; after a color is used once, it may not be used again.
    D. Agreement.  In this section you will have to write the proper form of an adjective chosen from a list of adjectives that describe people.  In the last three answers you will have to use the correct form of SER (es, son) in addition to the adjective.  For example, the list contains the adjectives  alto/a   and    trabajador(a).  You see Ramón es ______ you could write either "alto" or "trabajador". Or you see Las chicas ____________ you could write either "son trabajadoras" or "son altas"; the verb is written because it was missing in the second example.  Each adjective may be used only once.
  

For Thursday September 3, 2009

• Memorize p.25 the parts of the body.
• Memorize p.26 descriptive words for persons, including trabajador(a) from the list on p.27.  Make sure you are comfortable with the various adjective forms of the three groups [1- rubio/-a,  joven, trabajador(a)] and the plurals of those words.
