COURSE REQUIREMENTS

  1. You must be present for all rehearsals. Any absence must be excused before the rehearsal in question, except for an unexpected illness or University sponsored field trips. Each unexcused absence will result in a ½ reduction of the final grade. An unexcused absence during a performance will result in the student failing the course, with the exception of documented personal or family illness.
  2. Rehearsals begin at 12:00. Everyone must be set-up and in their respective seat at this time. Those arriving late (10 min) will be considered absent.
  3. We will periodically hold section rehearsals in lieu of full ensemble rehearsals. These rehearsals will rotate by section, as needed. Section rehearsals held outside of class time will be scheduled with sensitivity to student schedules. Once these sectionals are scheduled, they become a requirement of the class.
  4. Excessive talking, or “noodling” on instruments, during rehearsals is not allowed.
  5. Every student in the ensemble must be officially registered for the course. No exceptions will be given, and those who remain unregistered will be dropped from the course.
  6. The music distributed in this class is the responsibility of the individual to whom it is given. Lost folders/music will result in the individual purchasing either the part or the entire chart, since individual parts for certain pieces cannot be purchased. This would be an extremely costly mistake, so take care of your music at all times!
  7. There will be a playing exam every month. The specific music will be announced a week in advance.
  8. You are responsible for preparing your part, and if individual help is needed I will be more than glad to assist you outside of rehearsal as time permits. It is a requirement of the course to practice your parts outside of class, so that all rehearsals will be spent on the consideration of ensemble issues rather than individual parts. I WILL call on individuals to play in class. If you are not prepared at all times it will be obvious, and your semester grade will reflect your effort.
  9. Concert dress will be as follows: Black dress pants, black socks, black shoes, and polo shirt with UND Jazz Ensemble logo.
  10. Setting-up and striking-down the entire stage for a performance is the responsibility of each student. You are also responsible for your own equipment.
