TEXT AND SUPPLIMENTARY MATERIALS
A selected, graded repertoire list is attached to this syllabus. This list is by no means exhaustive, and can change depending on student needs, current trends, recital requirements, and technical issues. A personal list will be highlighted based on each category (solos, etudes, orchestral excerpts, jazz improvisation, methods, and other material).
Applied lessons are designed to build technical proficiency, repertoire, and awareness of various problems and how to solve them. The purpose of this course is to expose the student to the major aspects of brass performance and to develop an appropriate fundamental approach to the instrument. On a weekly basis, students will be required to address the following areas: technique, timing, tone, tonguing, and tuning. Other areas to be addressed include breathing, transposition, jazz and orchestral excerpts, sight reading, and improvisation. To ensure that specific individual goals are met, each student will participate in devising a semester plan of study.
- The student should demonstrate a broad musical background based on a comprehensive understanding of music.
- The student should display the ability to appropriately perform standard literature representative of various style periods and genres. In doing so, the student should demonstrate the mastery of progressively more difficult techniques idiomatic to the trumpet.
- The student should display the ability to execute a variety of technical exercises idiomatic to the trumpet.
- The student should develop the ability to isolate problem areas in a composition and develop/recognize exercises that will address and ultimately resolve these problems, thereby developing good practice habits.
- The student should develop the ability to confidently perform in public, both as a soloist and in a variety of group situations.
- The student should develop the ability to sight-read literature at an appropriate level of difficulty.
- The student should demonstrate an understanding of the elements of music as they relate to musical expression.
- The student should exhibit a general knowledge of literature, available editions of literature, and available recordings of trumpet artists.
- The student should exhibit an awareness of various manufacturers and models of trumpets, and basic features pertaining to the construction of the trumpet.
- The student should demonstrate the ability to evaluate his/her own musical performance.
- The student should develop the necessary technical skills as required by the literature chosen at a progressively more difficult level.
- The student will receive weekly lessons ranging from 30 minutes to 60 minutes in length, depending on the students degree program and availability of instructor.
- Music convocations, student recitals and studio recitals will be scheduled so that the students will gain necessary performance experience.
- Attendance and participation in a prescribed number of recitals and musical events is required.
- Listening assignments will be given to help the student gain familiarity with current literature as well as professional trumpeters.
Grades will be determined using the following criteria: 75% will be based on preparation of assignments, attendance at lessons/brass class/trumpet class/recitals, and listening/ extracurricular activities. 25% will be based on juries and/or any other event in which a performance can be assessed. The grading scale is as follows: 90+=A, 80+=B, 70+=C, 60+=D, 59-=F.
Each student will submit an accurate semester schedule during the first week of classes, which will be used to schedule weekly lessons. This schedule will be posted on my office door. A minimum of 12 to 13 lessons will be given in the semester, which takes into account holidays and official off-campus functions for the student as well as instructor. Cancellations and rescheduling lessons require a 24 hour advanced notification. No-shows (10 minutes late or later) will be counted as absent, which carries a grade of “F” for the week. Unexcused absences/tardiness from three lessons will result in a failing grade for the semester. Lessons for which the student demonstrates a complete lack of preparation will be terminated, and the lesson will be treated as an absence. Brass class, trumpet class, and recitals are considered part of the lesson, and will take place once each week. Since these are normally one-time events, they cannot be made up.
The following selected repertoire list contains solos, orchestral and jazz excerpts, methods and etudes that are representative of the various levels of trumpet study. This list is only a guideline for selecting appropriate materials for trumpet students. Since each student has different needs and interests, the “year categories” are treated loosely, and the list can be amended as needed. Students studying for the Bachelor of Music in Performance degree, as well as graduate students, will receive an intensification of this schedule according to individual needs. Proficiency on various-pitched trumpets (C, Eb, and piccolo) is expected.
