PROJECT: Investigating the role of cell membrane receptors in plant defenses against feeding herbivory

I am interested in cell membrane receptors and their role in poplar defense. Transgenics and or protein interaction assays will be used to determine their role in defense.

Nicholas Bechly
Undergraduate Researcher
September 2009- present

B.S. Biology in progress

PROJECT:

Analysis of activation tagged poplar lines to identify insect resistance genes. Cole also maintains our populations of Lepidopteran insect larvae.

Haylee Dassinger
Undergraduate Researcher
May 2008 - present

B.S. Chemistry in progress

PROJECT:

I am working with Alicia to discover insect resistant genes in hopes of improving plantation forestry. We began this project during the summer of 08 when we traveled to Queen's University in Ontario, Canada and screened a population of activation tagged trees with a series of bioassays (thanks to Dr. Sharon Regan and her lab.) We now have DNA from the trees that were deemed "interesting" and are working on finding out which genes are responsible for the possible insect resistance.

Alicia Grant
Undergraduate Researcher
September 2008 - present

B.S. Biology in progress

PROJECT:

I am assisting Justin in his project with cell membrane receptors and their role in plant defense. I am currently performing pre-screens for the primers he has designed and using q-PCR to analyze differences in gene amplification.
