As a faculty member at UND, I am most deeply concerned that the State
Board would take the action it did this morning [12/21/00]. While there
are any
number of reasons for my outrage, I will note just a few:
- (1) The action was taken in direct disregard of advice from the
Board's
attorney and in apparent violation of the North Dakota open meetings
law;
- (2) The action represents an intolerable example of micromanagement
and
interference in local campus governance;
- (3) The board took the action with no study, no apparent
recommendation
from any knowledge individuals, and total disregard for the work of the
commission appointed by the president; and,
- (4) Perhaps most importantly, the action sanctions continued
violation
of human rights and dignity at an institution of higher education.
The Board made no attempt to consider the negative repercussions of this
action on the institution, on faculty and staff members, and on the
students. Its action will perpetuate a climate of deliberate
indifference to the needs and concerns of minority students and faculty
and a hostile environment for those individuals and all others who value
human dignity above out-dated, ethnocentric tradition.
