INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETIC

COMMITTEE MEETING

January 15, 2008

ATTENDING:   James Antes, Steve Brekke, Judy DeMers, Ray Diez, Jon Jackson, Sue Jeno, Amanda Kaler, Glenn Olsen, Betty Ralston, Lowell Schweigert, Bruce Smith, Brian Strom, Paul Todhunter

Recorder:  Bev Hopman

Ray Diez called the meeting to order at 4:36 p.m. in the Memorial Room of the Memorial Union.

Minutes:  Lowell Schweigert moved the minutes from the November 20, 2007, meeting be approved as submitted.  Glenn Olsen seconded.  Motion carried.

Athletic Director Search:  Steve Brekke reported that Alden and Associates, a firm headed by a former athletic director, has been contracted to assist with the AD search.  The search committee will be meeting this week to compile a ranking sheet to use in evaluating applicants.  The job has been posted for about one week.  The timeline recommends the review of applications to begin February 8 and with a final decision by the end of March.  James Antes asked who would be making the final decision.  Betty Ralston stated that it would be Phil Harmeson in consultation with the new university president.  Since the new president would not yet be a University employee, he/she would not be able to officially make the selection.

Football Coach Search:  Steve Brekke said that Chris Mussman had been hired as the new head football coach.  An internal search was conducted and Coach Mussman was a very qualified candidate who came to the interviews well prepared and with a plan of action.  Ray Diez served on the search committee and stated that Chris Mussman indicated he wants to have open lines of communication with faculty.

Approval of Letterwinners:  Bev Hopman circulated a list of student-athletes recommended as letterwinners for the fall sports; soccer, men’s and women’s cross country and volleyball.  Judy DeMers moved the letterwinners be approved as recommended by their head coaches.  James Antes seconded.  Jon Jackson asked what reason the IAC, as faculty members, may have to withhold their approval of letterwinners.  One reason given was that a faculty member may be aware of specific academic issues.  Lowell Schweigert stated that the IAC previously withheld approval in one sport because they felt too few student athletes were recommended.  The IAC can request to see the criteria that coaches use to award letters and determine that it is appropriate.  The vote on the motion to approve the letterwinners was called and the motion carried.  Bev Hopman reported that with the change in the football coaching staff, football had not submitted names for consideration.  Coach Mussman said he would be meeting with the rest of the coaching staff and would be able to submit football recommendations by the end of the week. The football awards banquet will take place before the next IAC meeting.  Bev Hopman asked if an e-mail vote could be conducted so the letterwinner certificates could be presented at the awards program.  Sue Jeno moved to suspend the Sturgis Rule and vote via e-mail on the football letterwinners.  Motion carried. (The proposed football letterwinner list was sent to the IAC Committee on Jan. 18, 2008.  On Jan. 21, 2008, IAC Chair Ray Diez reported he had received enough votes to approve the football letterwinners. The amended list of letterwinners is attached.)

NCAA Convention Report:  Betty Ralston and Sue Jeno attended the NCAA convention in Nashville, TN.  They voted on DII issues only since UND is classified as a DII school until next year.  The proposal for coaches to text and instant message recruits did not pass.  Sue Jeno reported on new legislation that will affect baseball.  The NCAA will now require baseball players to be eligible for competition during the fall semester if they are going to play during the spring semester.  If they transfer colleges, they will be required to sit out one year and forfeit that year of eligibility.  The new legislation also sets a minimum scholarship amount of 25% for baseball.  The legislation was a result poor academic progress by baseball teams throughout the NCAA.  Last year, over 50% of DI baseball teams failed to meet APR.

At the WCHA meetings, the men’s WCHA approved a scheduling alliance with Bemidji State.  There is some concern regarding the lack of growth of women’s hockey.  There are currently only 39 teams.  The NCAA standard to conduct national championships is a minimum of 40 teams.

FAR Updates:

  • Sue Jeno will continue to keep the IAC informed on the AD search process.
  • The role/interaction of IAC members with their assigned teams is still being defined.
  • The NCAA does not receive any money from football BCS games.  Hockey playoffs generate some income, but basketball playoffs are the biggest moneymaker for the NCAA.  To reap the most benefits from the NCAA in the move to DI, UND will want to develop the basketball program.

Director of Compliance Search:  Betty Ralston reported that Brock Thompson has resigned as head soccer coach and is serving as interim Director of Compliance.  A new search for a Director of Compliance will be conducted at the end of spring semester.

Athletic Department Updates:

Internal/Compliance Report:

  • Betty Ralston said that Rob Stiles, men’s golf coach, is a tenured professor in PXW.  As of July 1, 2008, his position will transfer to PXW.  UND is currently conducting a search for a head golf coach to oversee the men’s and women’s golf teams.  Cory Hilliard from Athletics will chair the committee.  Jayson Hajdu from media relations will also serve on the committee.  Betty Ralston would like an IAC member to serve on the committee as well.  Anyone interested in serving on the search committee can e-mail her.
  • The 2nd Annual Scholar Athlete Recognition program will be held on Feb. 26 at 3:15 p.m. in the Hyslop Sports Center.  IAC members will be receiving an invitation.
  • The overall student athlete GPA was under 3.0 fall semester.  The women’s basketball team had the best GPA with 6 student athletes achieving a 4.0.

External Report:

  • Steve Brekke said he is continuing to receive pledges for impact scholarships.
  • Steve Brekke and Josh Morton are working on the Fighting Sioux Club budget for next year.  No increase in FSC membership fees is expected.

New Business:

  • Jon Jackson asked that IAC members contact him to help assign point value to the AD search criteria.
  •  Betty Ralston asked that IAC members try to take part in the AD interview process and asked what time would be best.  4:30 p.m., with the exception of Wednesdays, seemed to be the time most IAC members would be available.
  • Sue Jeno said that all AD candidates interviewed would have the same schedule.

The meeting adjourned at 5:29 p.m.  The next meeting is scheduled for February 19, 2008, at 4:30 p.m.
