Internal: Betty Ralston said the application deadline has closed for the Associate AD/CFO and the Director of Compliance position openings. However, the deadlines may be extended to attract more quality candidates. Two assistant football coaches have been hired, Rod Carey on offense and Joshua Kotelnicki on defense. A new position, head men’s and women’s golf coach, has been filled by Dan Frei. Coach Frei is currently coaching the women’s team in a part time, non-benefited position. Combining the men’s and women’s coaching position will help address some gender equity issues. Kristen Gay has been named the new head soccer coach. She will be hiring an assistant coach soon. Other positions that will be opening soon are the combination head tennis coach/academic services assistant, track and field assistant, swimming and diving assistant, head baseball coach and full time assistant baseball coach.
The Spring Award Program is scheduled for April 30. More information will be available at the April meeting and IAC members will receive an invitation.
The Academic Services area in the Hyslop is almost ready for use.
External: The goal for new external dollars for scholarships is $470,000 for FY09. The impact scholarship funding is currently at $300,000 or about 60% of the goal.
Compliance: Betty Ralston said waivers are being filed for several student-athletes. Student-athletes are completing their evaluations of the coaches for winter sports. The spring sport evaluations will be completed in late April. Donna Pearson asked when exit interviews would begin. Betty Ralston said they will be mandatory for next year. The forms are not ready yet but she would like to have them available for approval at the next IAC meeting.
FAR Update: Sue Jeno said competition schedules need to be approved by the IAC as they come in. IAC members will need to work with the teams that they are assigned to review schedules. She stated that the IAC will need to be actively involved to help UND adhere to the stricter DI rules which will be in effect the day after commencement. The NCAA will be monitoring UND very closely during the transition and UND can not afford to be cited for lack of institutional control.
Jon Jackson asked if there was a place on the internet for committee members to review NCAA rules. Sue Jeno said to visit the NCAA website at ncaa.org and to click on “Legislation and Governance”. Betty Ralston said IAC members can register at that website for the NCAA news. She stated there is also useful information in the student-athlete handbook which was distributed in fall. IAC members are also welcome to attend the coach’s weekly rules luncheons.
Sue Jeno said the DI transition strategic plan is being developed as dictated by the NCAA. A draft will be ready by April 15 for the new AD to review. The final version is due to the NCAA by June 1, 2008. It will be refined and added to each year for the next four years. The IAC will be able to review the document. Betty Ralston said the IAC will be involved in the certification process which will take place the last two years of the transition, 2010-11 and 2011-12. UND will need to complete a self study after 5 years and will have an NCAA review in 10 years.
Missed Class Time: Ray Diez expressed concern regarding team scheduling. He cited the release of the football schedule as an example. It was released to the public before the IAC had an opportunity to review it. All schedules will need to be submitted to the IAC for approval before the last meeting on May 20.
Ray Diez had e-mailed information to committee members with missed class policies from other schools. He and Susan Nelson will work together to draft a missed class time policy for UND and present it at the next IAC meeting. Jon Jackson asked if UND had an attendance requirement. Under UND policy, attendance requirements are determined by each professor.
Announcements: Betty Ralston reported that Barbara Burke withdrew her application for the AD position.
Minutes: Jon Jackson moved the minutes from the February 19, 2008, meeting be approved. Jim Antes seconded. Motion carried.
The meeting adjourned at 5:35 p.m. The next meeting will be April 15 at 4:30 p.m. in the Memorial Room of the Union.
