COMMITTEE MEETING
September 18, 2007

Ray Diez, Sue Jeno, Glenn Olsen, Betty Ralston, Lowell Schweigert, Brian Strom, Paul Todhunter

Ray Diez called the meeting
to order at 4:37
p.m. in the Memorial Room of
the Memorial Union.
Minutes: Judy DeMers moved the minutes from the August 28, 2007, meeting by approved as
submitted. Glenn Olsen seconded. Motion carried.
Announcement: Ray Diez announced that Betty Ralston and
Steve Brekke have been named as co-acting athletic directors during Tom
Buning’s leave of absence. Betty Ralston
will be dealing with internal matters and Steve Brekke will handle external affairs.
FAR Updates:
- Sue Jeno reported the DI Committee met on Sept.
11. Betty Ralston said the
committee would continue to meet in Tom Buning’s absence and will be
divided into 4 areas: Philosophy; Rules/Compliance; Academic Integrity;
and Equity Welfare and Sportsmanship.
- At the last IAC meeting, Sue Jeno explained the
plan to divide the 450+ student-athletes among the 9 faculty members of
the IAC. Each IAC faculty member
will work with the student-athletes and coaches to address academic and
student life issues. The teams were
divided into groups of approximately 50 student-athletes with the
tentative IAC assignments as follows:
football/offense - open; football /defense - open; men’s basketball,
women’s basketball and volleyball – Ray Diez; men’s and women’s hockey –
Judy DeMers; baseball and softball - open; men’s and women’s swimming -
open; men’s and women’s golf, women’s track and cross country – Jim Antes;
men’s track and cross country; tennis – Paul Todhunter; soccer – Glenn
Olsen. Sue Jeno will contact the
absent faculty members to assign the open sports.
Department Updates:
- Betty Ralston thanked everyone for their
assistance in the Director of Compliance search. One candidate, Kyle Brennan, was brought
on campus for interviews.
- Athletics will be advertising for an Associate
Athletic Director/Chief Financial Officer.
This position was not in the Proforma but was recommended by Phil
Harmeson, Alice Brekke and Diane Nelson.
- Another new position will be open soon for a
Director of Athletic Academic Services.
Betty Ralston said this will start with an internal search since
knowledge of UND and the NDUS will be helpful.
- Alice Brekke has asked to be on the agenda for
the October meeting.
- Betty Ralston displayed the UND Vision One
brochure. The brochure is being
sent to Presidents, Athletic Directors and coaches of conferences UND is
interested in joining. The brochure
is also being used as a fundraising tool by the UND Foundation.
- There were no major compliance issues to
discuss. Focus has been on
getting/keeping the fall teams eligible.
- Grant Corbett, golf, won the Sioux Invitational
held Sept. 17-18.
Old Business:
- Susan Logan Nelson has agreed to fill the open
spot on the IAC.
- Bev Hopman reported that the Athletic Hall of
Fame Banquet was held on Sept. 15.
Six individuals and three teams were inducted. Dave Hakstol was honored with the Thomas
Clifford Award for coaching and Dave Gunther was named Honorary
Letterwinner.
- Ray Diez reported that the Ron Pynn Cross Country
Invitational was well attended. The
UND men’s team finished 2nd and the women’s team finished 3rd.
The meeting adjourned at 5:05 p.m. The next
meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 16, at 4:30 p.m.
