committee members; Judy DeMers and Donna Pearson.
Department Updates:
Tom Buning gave a power point

Budget: One of the critical areas addressed was the
Department of Athletics budget shortfall.
Tom Buning indicated that if no changes were made to the Athletic
budget, Athletics would end the year $680,000 in debt. He is working with Alice Brekke,
Director of the Budget Office, and Juli Reisnour, Athletics Business Manager,
to solve this problem. They have a three
prong plan to cut the budget. One third
will be from across the board budget cuts, one third will be from staff and
personnel changes and one third will be from an increase in fund raising.
Sue Jeno said that the IAC
approved a preliminary budget in the spring but that the committee was told a
final budget would be presented for approval in the fall. It was also recommended that the IAC be
provided with quarterly financial reports.
Judy DeMers questioned UND’s financial relationship with the Alerus and REA. Tom Buning said REA experienced a $400,000
deficit last year. He is working with
others to rewrite the REA contract to increase revenues returned to UND
Athletics. The Alerus contract is signed
for this year but will be evaluated in the future.
Sioux Illustrated: A Publications Editor is being hired by
Athletics and will report to the Director of Media Relations. The editor’s primary responsibility will be
Sioux Illustrated but that individual will also assist with other areas in
Media Relations as time permits. Rob Bollinger
said an editorial board has been formed to oversee Sioux Illustrated. The board members are Rob Bollinger, Amanda Hvidsten, Don Kojich and Jody
Hodgson.
Athletic Reorganization: Tom Buning has been working with Human
Resources on the reorganization of the Athletics staff. Two Associate Athletic Directors, Rob
Bollinger and Betty Ralston, have been added, two Assistant Athletic Directors in
operations and marketing will be added.
Several positions will be eliminated and the reporting structure will be
streamlined. The goal is to have new
staff, including an Assistant Athletic Director – Marketing, in place by
January 1.
Facilities: The Athletic Department will be working on a
facilities master plan to present to the President’s Office. No target date has been set.
