North Dakota Badlands Star Party
Hosted by the Northern Sky Astronomical Society

Badlands Star Party Details

Our event will be held in the North Unit of Theodore Roosevelt National Park.  Telescopes will be set up on Oxbow overlook at sunset Friday and Saturday nights for evening viewing. A constellation tour will be given as soon as stars are visible.  Solar telescopes will likely not be set up this year due to the lack of sunspots. All observing is weather dependent (clear skies).

Find the park in Google Maps

The weather in August is usually hot and dry but the nights can be cool and rain storms are possible. The nearest town is Watford City, 10 miles north of the park.

Fees: There are no fees for the event other than regular park entrance and camping. Your permit for the north unit is good for seven days and also works for the south unit. We recommend scheduling time to visit both parks.

Oxbow Overlook

Note that the observing site is nine miles from the campsite. Allow at least a half hour to drive from one to the other and watch for bison that may be blocking the road.
