Distinguished Amateur Astronomer Award.

Given annually to recognize one amateur astronomer for their commitment to the advancement and sustainability of our hobby. The honoree will be decided based on his/her dedication to advancing amateur astronomy through public outreach and education activities, continued self-improvement in astronomy and their desire to contribute to professional research in astronomy. Nominations are accepted from any of the 3 astronomical societies that operate in North Dakota and Minnesota who sponsor the yearly North Dakota Star Party. Nominations are judged by members of the North Dakota Star Party Committee and will be awarded at the North Dakota Star Party. The Northern Sky Astronomical Society (NSAS) created this award in 2003. The awardees astronomy club agrees to pay for 1/2 of this award with the remainder coming from NSAS.

  • 2003: Jay Brausch, Glen Ullen, ND: Aurora watcher & Sunspot observer, sponsored by Northern Sky Astronomical Society.

  • 2004: Paul Erickson, East Grand Forks, MN: Dedication to local astronomy club, assisted in the formation of the Northern Sky Astronomical Society, Award sponsored by Northern Sky Astronomical Society.

  • 2005: Brian Kerns, Stanton, ND: Member of the Tim Puckett Supernova Search Team, huge support of North Dakota Star Party, sponsored by Northern Sky Astronomical Society.
