Guest Speakers

We have worked long and hard at getting this years speakers. We have real professional astronomers and outstanding amateur astronomer projects being planned. Our speaker line-up in past years have been the greatest success and once again we are grateful for our wonderful list of speakers.
Calina Seybold
Calina C. Seybold was an Activity Lead for the Deep Impact project,

primarily responsible for testing and executing science instrument

calibrations on the spacecraft. She is a senior systems engineer in the Systems and Software Division at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Dr. Seybold has a B.S. in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Maryland, College Park, and an M.S. and Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin.

"" I was informed by Dr. Seybold that this presentation will focus on just how we actually targeted the comet, not strictly the cometary science learned from the mission, but how we engineered the mission in the first place, she also told me she had plenty of eye candy for those who want to know more about the comet. "Hot Flashes?" What are they anyways? X-ray bursts, Gamma Ray Bursts, Blazars, Quasars, and Supernova oh my!

Dean Smith Ph.D. candidate UND Physics will speak about the discovery of these exotic high energy astrophysical events, and where they fit into the large picture of the universe. Since we first

looked into the sky using new telescopic eyes we have seen these odd high energy events, and since the discovery of gamma ray bursts there have been a lot more different kinds of events, Dean will lead us through the nomenclature of all these new exotic objects.

Dean Smith earned his Bachelors and Masters degrees in Physics from University of North Dakota, he has a second Masters degree in Space Studies also from UND and now he is working with Dr. Tim Young towards his Doctorate in physics emphasizing in the study of theoretical astrophysics. He is an avid amateur astronomer and has served as President, Vice President, and is currently the Treasurer and Webmaster of Northern Sky Astronomical Society. Dean also is activly serving on the committee for this event.
