Admissions Criteria for the Phi Beta Kappa Alpha Chapter of North Dakota
Students of high academic achievement pursuing a liberal arts degree
in the College of Arts and Sciences are normally eligible for consideration
for membership. Liberal subjects and studies are those considered to be
designed principally for knowledge, understanding, and appreciation of
the natural and social world in which we live, in contrast to those intended
to develop vocational techniques. It is recommended that the record of
each candidate show a reasonable amount of course work in the fields of
the social sciences, languages, literatures, science, and mathematics.
The following language has been quoted from the chapter by-laws.
ARTICLE V. MEMBERS
Section 2. Prospective Members in Course shall be eligible for election if they are students of the University of North Dakota College of Arts and Sciences whose work has been liberal in character and purpose, this requirement being satisfied ordinarily by a program three-fourths of which consists of liberal studies. Liberal subjects and studies shall be considered to be those designed principally for knowledge, understanding and appreciation of the natural and social world in which we live, for example, courses in such fields as literature, languages, philosophy, the fine arts, the social sciences, mathematics, and pure sciences. These studies are in contrast to those intended to develop vocational techniques. It is recommended that the record of each candidate show a reasonable amount of training in the fields of the social sciences, languages, literatures, science, and mathematics. They may be considered for election as follows:
A. An election shall be held as soon after the beginning of the fall semester as grade point averages are available. Only students who fulfill the following conditions shall be eligible for consideration in the fall:
(1) They must have earned at least 90 hours of credit at the University of North Dakota.
(2) They must have a grade point average of 3.8 or above.
B. A second election shall be held as soon as grade point averages, which include the grades for the first semester, can be secured. Only members of the graduating class who fulfill the following conditions shall be eligible for consideration in the spring:
(1) They must have a grade point average of 3.6 or above.
(2) Those students who are currently completing their work at the University of North Dakota must already have earned at least 105 hours at least 60 of which, upon graduation, must be from the University of North Dakota.
C. Each of the above elections shall also consider those students who graduated at the previous commencement, but were overlooked, or who may now qualify. These students must meet the same criteria imposed on their previous peer group.
D. In the case of all elections, for candidates who have more than one-third of their total credit hours completed with no letter grade, the Executive Committee shall request and examine the transcripts and report the results, upon request, at the Chapter meeting.
E. The total number of undergraduates elected from any class shall not exceed fifteen percent.
F. Elections shall be by resident faculty members and shall be by secret ballot unless the requirement is waived by unanimous consent of the electorate present. All elections shall require a three-fourths vote of the electors present. Members who are thus elected shall be inducted into membership as soon as possible after election.
