UND Future Educators Plan to 'Pack the Pack' for Biloxi School

GRAND FORKS - Members of the Student North Dakota Education Association (SNDEA) at the University of North Dakota (UND), in coordination with the Grand Forks Education Association, are working to collect books, teacher resources, and money to benefit Jeff Davis and Nicholas Elementary schools in Biloxi, MS hit hard by Hurricane Katrina.  UND Senior Sarah Lundy explained, "After the flood here in Grand Forks, so many people reached out to help us.  This is now our community's chance to give back."

This local effort is part of a statewide SNDEA initiative called "Pack the Pack for Katrina" intended to address the needs of teachers and students returning to school in Biloxi, MS after the effects of Hurricane Katrina.  During American Education Week (November 13-19), each local chapter will use backpacks to collect donations at schools and businesses in their area.  The donations will then be combined and sent to a school in Biloxi, MS with the help of the North Dakota Education Association.  As a part of "Pack the Pack for Katrina," the UND chapter of SNDEA will be collecting donations on the UND campus, at Columbia Mall, and in the Grand Forks Public Schools from November 11-18.

On campus, student volunteers will be offering children's books and popcorn to students, faculty, and staff in exchange for donations.  The campus community can stop by the 1st Floor of the Education Building on Nov 15 & 16 from 1-4:00PM to look at the selection of books, enjoy popcorn, and donate to "Pack the Pack."  Volunteers will be on the 1st Floor of the Union on November 17th from 1-4:00PM to collect cash donations.

At Columbia Mall, SNDEA members will be collecting books and cash donations on Friday November 11 from 5-9:00PM, Saturday November 12 from 12-4:00PM, and Sunday November 13 from 12-4:00PM.  They will be located at the west court near the new play area.  In addition to collecting donations, volunteers will also be offering story times to children.  Beginning on each hour and half hour, SNDEA members will be sharing their favorite stories aloud.

The Grand Forks Education Association is partnering with SNDEA to place a backpack in each public school office in the city during American Education Week.  Each school community is being asked to place new and lightly used books and teacher resources in their school's backpack.  UND Senior Nathan Ziemkowski said, "Many organizations have donated clothes and money.  As future teachers, we understand the value of classroom resources and books.  We know what these items mean to students and we just want to help out schools in the affected areas."

Join SNDEA in helping Biloxi, MS students and teachers by donating to "Pack the Pack for Katrina."

April 2005 Outreach to Teach

On Saturday April 2nd, about 20 SNDEA members from UND, NDSU, and Mayville State converged on the Lagrave Learning Center in Grand Forks for Outreach to Teach 2005.  Volunteers painted the walls of the center's computer lab and after-school area and created bulletin boards.

SNDEA chapters from around the state chose March and April to give back to the communities they are a part of by donating their time and resources to a building in need of some extra attention.

All of the money for this project  came from a NEA CLASS Grant intended to help individual chapters address social needs in the community and build support for public education.
