Andropogon gerardii
Big Bluestem

Photographer Dana Florin
"Chief of the Prairie"

I started out as a seed in the ground
and did not know how long I'd be around.

I saw the sun and moonlight too;
thinking of all the things I might go through.

The winters seemed so long and cold
but I knew that I had to be bold.

Summers came and fall flew by
 all around my prairie eyes.

The destruction of my prairie friends
and I knew their hearts would be hard to mend.

But I stood strong and here I am
thanking the earth for protecting them.

Please remember me in the ground
as you walk your children around.

Remember the fight that we went through
to have our beauty preserved for you.
