PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Welcome to the home page of the Eta Upsilon Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International. The Eta Upsilon Chapter is based at the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks. My name is Carma Hanson and not only am I a proud graduate of the UND College of Nursing, I am honored to be serving as the Chapter President for the 2006-2008 term.
Leadership, Scholarship, Education, and Research: These are the four cornerstones that comprise the foundation of the Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International. Started in 1922 by six students of nursing at Indiana University, the society has grown to include more than 426 chapters across the globe, with more than 400,000 inducted members who are active in more than 90 different countries and territories.
The founders of the society named the honor society for the following words, Storgé, Tharsos, and Timé, meaning “love”, “courage”, and “honor”. The founders believed these to be the enduring values that are at the root of the nursing profession—the foundation upon which the science grows and is used. Changing the status of nursing and improving health care were their ideals as they are ours. Today, as in 1922, the pathways for nursing excellence begin with scholarship, leadership, and research applied in clinical practice settings.
In 1979, several faculty at the University of North Dakota College of Nursing felt the need and had a desire to establish a nursing honor society within the College. This included Dean Elisabeth Zinser and many faculty who were members of Sigma Theta Tau chapters elsewhere in the nation. Again a nursing student stepped forward. Alison Fogg, a transfer student from Delaware , identified the absence of a nursing honor society on campus. Together the needs of both the student and faculty were combined and preliminary planning was begun. The goal was culminated in 1984 when the Eta Upsilon Chapter of STTI was officially recognized.
Today, the leaders and members of the Eta Upsilon Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International carry on that rich tradition that began so many years ago. The chapter is based at the UND College of Nursing but has many strong members from the community and surrounding region as well. Each year, the chapter holds an Induction Ceremony for new members to join. Students are selected based on their GPA eligibility and community members (can join at any time) are nominated by their peers based on their contributions to the nursing profession.
The Board, consisting of several members, meets on a monthly basis and is comprised of several committees that also meet as needed to accomplish their tasks. While our chapter will continue with many of the traditional activities (newsletters, Heyse-Cory Lectureship, membership meetings, etc.) we are also excited to bring about some new strategies. The chapter will be moving our Induction Ceremony to a fall event rather than a spring one. Our hope is that this will allow many of the students being inducted to become involved prior to their graduation. Another exciting activity will be the implementation of an internship/mentorship program whereby we hope to “grow” and train members interested in taking on a leadership role in this or other organizations.
I am excited to be serving in the role of President for my local chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International. I have loved being involved so as to network and learn from many of the great colleagues who are also Sigma members. As with any organization, involvement at any level is key to not only the success of the organization but it enhances the value of your experience. I urge all members to say “Yes” if asked to assist. Better yet, why not call and offer a “How can I help?”. I guarantee that giving back will garner much benefit for you as well. If there are members of the community interested in joining our organization, please do not hesitate to contact me or any of the other board members listed on our web site.Carma Hanson, MS, RN
